Upset by Osage’s Indians in the first round and held to 26 points by Linn in the consolation semifinals, Todd Rehmert’s Owensville Dutchmen looked to avoid going winless in their own tournament taking on Cuba’s Wildcats Saturday afternoon in the seventh-place game.

Nursing a 25-22 lead midway through the second quarter, OHS went on a 17-4 run to gradually pull away from their Highway 19 foes for a 71-42 victory kicking off Saturday’s action at the 30th Owensville Tournament.

“We needed this win to end our tournament on a high note,” Rehmert said. “Unlike our game Thursday, we were able to score and get shots to fall.”

Falling behind 2-0 in the opening seconds of the game, OHS scored the next six points getting four from Cason Gray and two from Daxton Mehrhoff for a 6-2 lead at the 5:45 mark of the opening quarter.

Edging Cuba in the second quarter, Austin Terry scored four points in a 30-second span sparking an 8-0 run to end the first half with Owensville leading Cuba 32-22.

Gray led OHS and all first-half scorers with a baker’s dozen (13) in the point department.

Cuba battled in the third quarter edging Owensville 17-15. In spite of this, the Dutchmen still went into the fourth quarter with a 47-35 lead.

Hitting 13 of 20 free throws in the final eight minutes, Rehmert’s Dutchmen posted their second win over the Wildcats in the span of nearly a month.

Doubling his point total in the second half, Gray finished with a game-high 26 points to go along with four rebounds and four steals.

Not only did Gray led the Dutchmen in scoring against Cuba, he also led Owensville with 21 points in first-round action against School of the Osage and 12 markers against Linn in the consolation semifinals.

Doing most of his damage in the second half, Trevor Abernathy reached double figurers scoring nine of his 12 points.

Terry nearly made it three Dutchmen in double figures with an impressive stat line off the bench of eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

Daxton Mehrhoff added six points followed by five from fellow guard Zaid Epstein.

Tyler Heidbrink added four points and six rebounds.

Seth Mayberry and Boyde Nicks each canned a 3-pointer for three points while the duo of Jay Copeland and Brady Smith rounded out the Dutchmen scoring against Cuba with two points apiece.

Simon Siebert led Cuba in the seventh-place game with 16 points and nine rebounds.

During Cuba’s 66-48 loss to Salem in the consolation semifinals, Jonathan Bayless paced the Wildcats with 15 points netting 13 of them in the second half.

Al Palmer, Trevor Shockley and Siebert all had eight points nearly making it a quartet of Cuba Wildcats scoring in double figures against Salem.

Alex Noltkamper cleaned up the glass against Salem with a team-high 11 rebounds.

Bayless’ best game in the tournament came in first-round action against Steelville when he netted a team-high 20 points.

Owensville will continue a streak of home games to open 2019 Friday night against Wright City at 5:30 p.m.
