WASHINGTON — Killing two birds with one stone.

That is what Todd Rehmert’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball team looked to do Saturday afternoon in the seventh-place game of the 67th Borgia Turkey Tournament against Union’s Wildcats.

On one hand, OHS looked to get into the win column for the first time during this young season. On the other, they came into the game losers of 14 straight games against Four Rivers Conference (FRC) opponents.

Seeing Union get within four at 54-50 with 3:10 remaining, Owensville outscored the Wildcats 11-7 the rest of the game before going on to a 65-57 victory that snapped their 14-game FRC skid and improved their record to 1-2 on the young season.

“I’m proud of our guys and how they played all week,” Rehmert said. “We played well against Borgia and Normandy but came up short in both games. Today against Union, we were able to put it all together and get a win against a (Four Rivers) conference opponent.”

Plagued with foul trouble for most of the tournament, junior post player Austin Terry came through with two key plays in the final three minutes against Union.

Grabbing a key rebound, Terry was able to kick it out to an open Trevor Abernathy who splashed home a 3-pointer bumping the Dutchmen lead to seven at 57-50.

With 1:31 left, Terry scored and got fouled before completing a 3-point play for an Owensville 60-50 lead with 1:31 remaining.

Free throws in the final :45 seconds from Brendan Decker, Abernathy and Terry sealed the deal on the Dutchmen victory.

“We’ve played so hard all week as a team and I’m happy that we we’re able to end the tournament on a winning note against Union,” Abernathy said.

Leading all scorers, Abernathy finished with 15 points for OHS.

Also finishing in double figures against the Wildcats were Decker with 13 points and Cason Gray with 10 points in spite of collecting three first-half fouls.

Justin Garner just missed making it four Dutchmen in double figures scoring nine points.

Derek Brandt’s solid stat line against Union included eight points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

Tyler Heidbrink rounded out the scoring against Union with a second-quarter bucket for two points.

Unable to overcome a barrage of hot 3-point shooting by the host Knights, Owensville fell to the consolation side of the bracket after a 78-48 loss to Borgia.

Against Normandy in the consolation semifinals, the Dutchmen carried a 52-51 lead into the fourth quarter before seeing Decker, Gray, Brandt and Garner all foul out of Owensville’s 83-72 loss to the Vikings.

In that game, both the Dutchmen and Vikings combined for 64 fouls which is third most in Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) boy’s basketball history.

Sitting ahead of Owensville and Normandy for combined fouls are Jasper and Dadeville with 66 back in 2002 along with Webster Groves and McKinley who combined for 74 fouls back in 1953.

Abernathy once again led OHS in scoring with a team-high 26 points against Normandy.

Joining him in double figures against the Vikings were Decker (12), Gray (11) and Heidbrink (11).

Gray and Abernathy just missed double doubles by recording eight rebounds and seven steals respectively.

OHS will return to action Monday on the road against Washington with a 5:30 p.m., start time for JV action.
