Over a week removed from their victory over North Tech at the Borgia Turkey Tournament, Todd Rehmert’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball teams welcomed the Colonels from Missouri Military Academy out of Mexico, Mo., to Owensville High School Monday night.

Facing a 37-26 deficit going into the fourth quarter, OHS scored 15 of the 21 points in the final eight minutes from the free-throw line to score a 47-43 victory over the visiting Colonels.

Going 7-8 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, Trevor Abernathy led the Dutchmen comeback charge with a game-high 18 points.

Cason Gray also reached double figures scoring 11 of his 15 points in the second half.

Brady Smith and Boyde Nicks each chipped in three points while the quartet of Daxton Mehrhoff, Tyler Heidbrink, Justin Garner and Austin Terry each netted two points for the victorious Dutchmen.

Back to .500 with a 2-2 overall record, Rehmert’s Dutchmen will look to move to 3-2 on the young season Friday night when they will host Linn’s Wildcats at OHS in a tripleheader with freshman action tipping things off at 5 p.m.

JV Dutchmen vs. MMA

Opening their season with a pair of losses in the New Haven JV Boys Basketball Tournament, Terra Heidle’s junior varsity Dutchmen ballers hoped the third time would be a charm for the win column.

Deadlocked at 6-6 after one quarter, the JV Dutchmen exploded for 25 second-quarter points before going on to a 65-34 victory over MMA’s JV Colonels.

Doing the biggest part of his damage in the second half, freshman Derek Brandt paced Owensville and all scorers with a game-high 17 points. He had 10 of those in the second half.

Landon Valley also reached double digits with 14 points.

Austin Terry nearly made it a trio of JV Dutchmen in double figures putting up eight points all in the first half.

Adding six points each was the trio of TJ Whelan, Austin Lowder and Brendan Decker.

Logan Evans netted four second-quarter points while Ashton Kramme rounded out the JV Dutchmen scoring with a fourth-quarter bucket for two points.

Closing the month of November in tournament action at New Haven, Owensville took on a pair of Highway 47 opponents in Washington’s Blue Jays and St. Clair’s Bulldogs.

In first-round action last Tuesday against Washington, OHS was outscored 34-15 in the second half before falling 59-28 to the Blue Jays.

Decker led the JV Dutchmen against Washington with nine points followed closely with six points from Valley.

Evans kicked in five markers while Brandt contributed four points against the Blue Jays.

Whelan and Lowder each netted two points to round out the JV Dutchmen scoring against Washington.

In the consolation semifinals at New Haven against St. Clair, Owensville could not make a 21-15 halftime lead stick before falling to the Bulldogs 43-41.

Brandt led all scorers in a losing cause with a game-high 12 points while Decker duplicated his scoring effort from the Washington game with nine points against St. Clair.

Evans connected on a pair of 3-point shots helping him score eight points against the Bulldogs.

Heidle’s JV Dutchmen basketball team will look to even their record at 2-2 on the young season Friday night hosting Linn in the middle game of a boy’s basketball tripleheader at OHS.
