Dutchmen upset bid falls short in Owensville Tournament opener

Nearly seeing Pacific’s Indians deliver a first-round upset Monday night, Cullen VanLeer’s seventh-seeded Owensville Dutchmen looked to open their portion of the 34th Owensville Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament with an upset of the second-seeded Union Wildcats in the night cap of a first-round doubleheader.

Leading 16-12 after one quarter, the orange and black saw the Wildcats go on a 14-4 run in the second before falling 59-50 against Union.

Drawing first blood on a Layne Evans bucket at the 6:54 mark of the first quarter, Jansen Loeb sparked a 7-0 run scoring with 4:56 for the opening quarter.

Ahead 12-5 at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter, OHS needed bucket from Will Lauth and Bryce Payne to go into the second quarter with a 16-12 lead.

Limited to four points in the second quarter, Owensville found themselves on the wrong end of a 26-20 halftime score.

Lauth led the Dutchmen with nine first-half points while Union’s Ryan Rapert led the Wildcats with 12 first-half points.

Trading points with Union throughout most of the third quarter, buckets by Lauth and Tanner Meyer trimmed the Dutchmen deficit to 39-36 with 2:50 left in the period.

Answering with a 7-0 run, the Wildcats went into the fourth quarter with a 46-36 lead.

Able to get within eight points on four occasions during the final eight minutes, Owensville will now look to finish the tournament with two wins on the consolation side of the bracket.

Scoring 11 second-half points, Evans led the Dutchmen with a team-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Lauth finished with 15 points, three assists and two rebounds.

Payne added six points in addition to pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Charlie Whelan chipped five points and dished out a team-high four assists for the Dutchmen.

Meyer finished with four points, five rebounds and four steals while Landon Ely and Eli Graham rounded out the Dutchmen scoring against Union with two points each.

Rapert led the Wildcats with 22 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Liam Hughes also reached double figures for Union with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Opening the 34th Owensville Tournament Monday night was the fourth-seeded Cuba Wildcats taking on the fifth-seeded Pacific Indians.

Gunning for a mild upset, Pacific led Cuba 37-35 with 6:27 left in regulation before Cuba’s Preston Heads scored the final eight points for the Wildcats helping them claim a 43-40 come-from-behind victory over the Indians.

Heads led the Wildcats with 19 points followed closely by Dylan Beal with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Quin Blackburn led Pacific with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots while Jack Meyer also reached double digits with 11 points.
