First scenes of “Rio Rules the World” shot at Hometown Market in Gerald

A small group of cast and crew from Always Late TV arrived at Hometown Market Sunday morning to film the first scenes of Kevin Edwards’ latest movie. “Rio Rules the World” is his first feature-length film, following two short films.

Edwards is an independent filmmaker who also produced a popular streaming series, “Local Ambition” featuring models who competed among themselves each episode. His emphasis is on using local talent from the St. Louis area.

This wasn’t Edwards first visit to Gerald. He has shot scenes in the Bistro at the Mill, the building where Patchy’s Pizzeria is now located, in City Park on the streets of the town. This is his second trip to the grocery store building.

One shot was filmed in the meat aisle of the store as Rio and her companion fill their cart with groceries. A second shot was taken at the cash register.

That won’t happen for a while though since Sunday’s scenes were the first ones shot for the upcoming film.

One of Edwards’ short films is “Schmetterling” which is the German word for butterfly. It features a woman by the same name who witnesses a murder. Authorities don’t take her seriously because she is also an addict. It can be watched free on Plex.

“Bonnie Conway, P.I.” is another of Edwards’ short films. It is now streaming on Mometu.

Hopefully, any inconvenience shoppers encountered during the morning’s filming will be compensated when they can see their own Hometown Market in a movie.
