Five state medals for OWC wrestlers

Of the 13 Owensville Wrestling Club (OWC) wrestlers that qualified for the Missouri USA Folkstyle State Championships in Springfield over the weekend, five left southwest Missouri with medals for finishing inside the top six of their respective age and weight classes.

Leading the way for the orange and black was Owensville Middle School (OMS) seventh grader Ambrosiah Salamone who became the club’s second state champion in their history joining Bo Buddemeyer who won one back in 2021.

Salamone pinned her way to the championship match in the 12U 120-pound bracket against Rolla’s Piper Smith before winning a state title by technical fall (17-1).

Wrestlers pinned by Salamone on her road to a state title included Excelsior Springs’ Brooklyn Ross (2:11), Eagles Wrestling Club’s Alexa Hooley (:38) and Camdenton’s Jemma Carrillo (:41).

Mallory Stockton was the next future Dutchgirl wrestler to earn a spot on the medal stand.

Drawing byes to the quarterfinals, Stockton pinned Luci Stone in 2:01 to advance to the semifinals against Excelsior Springs’ Avrie Goetz.

Pinned in 4:05, Stockton was sent to the consolation semifinals against Hallsville’s Haven Jones.

Winning by fall in 3:05 over Jones, Stockton advanced to the third-place match and a rematch with Stone.

Pinning her in 3:15, Stockton avenged the earlier loss while earning a third-place medal in the 12U 155-pound weight class.

Maggie Branson opened her bid for a medal in the 8U 55-pound weight class with a win by technical fall (17-0) over Polo’s Maggie Allen.

Winning a 10-7 decision over Madilyn Schuster (Greater Heights Wrestling), Branson then won a 13-0 major decision over Ozark’s Ashlyn Reid to advance to the semifinals against Avery Johnson (St. Charles Wrestling).

Pinned in :37, Branson fell back to the consolation semifinals and a showdown with Leilani Huynh (Terminator Wrestling).

Losing by fall in 1:39, Branson then took on Carrollton’s Braelynn Chavez in the fifth-place match.

Branson settled for sixth place after being pinned in 2:53.

In the 12U 105-pound weight class, Gracie Rosselli wound up two matches shy of reaching the consolation semifinals.

Rosselli posted a win by fall over Cameron’s Khloe Ash (2:13) before being eliminated by Excelsior Spring’s Addison Ray by fall in 3:24.

Rounding the contingency of future Dutchgirls at the state tournament, Anieya Bergesch competed in the 14U 115-pound weight class.

Winning a 12-0 major decision over Lee’s Summit’s Skylar Root in the opening round of the tournament, Bergesch went on to a win by fall in 1:43 over Harrisonville’s Zoey Bailey before being eliminated two matches shy of the top six.

Bo Buddemeyer ended his OWC wrestling days with a third-place medal in the 14U 125-pound weight class.

He pinned Belton’s Santiago Diaz Suarez in 1:15 before losing a 9-2 decision to Webb City’s Cylis French sending him to the consolation side of the bracket.

Claiming a 4-3 decision over Marshfield’s Cayden Holt in the consolation semifinals, Buddemeyer earned a spot in the third-place match opposite Team Central’s Bodie Fichter.

Posting a win by fall in 1:15, Buddemeyer closed the book on his OWC and middle school wrestling career with a medal and will get to compete for at least one year with his older brother Steven in an Owensville High School (OHS) singlet.

Peyton Altemeyer rounded out the OWC contingency of medalists in the 8U 115-pound weight class by pinning his way into the semifinals with wins by fall over Harrsionville’s Kendal Aviles (:40) and Monett’s Conor Skipper.

Losing a 14-0 major decision to Odessa’s Reed Kelmel in the semifinals, Altemeyer lost a rematch with Aviles via an 11-1 major decision sending him to the fifth-place match against William Johnson (Ruby Combative).

Winning the match by fall in 2:42, Altemeyer secured a fifth-place medal from Springfield.

Greyson Conour competed for OWC in the 10U 85-pound weight class opening his tournament winning a 10-4 decision over Clinton’s Jake Kilgor.

He then lost his final two matches to be eliminated from the tournament.

Losing by technical fall to Abel Corns (Team North Starts), Conour saw him go on to win a state championship.

Chayce Faulkner donned orange and black in the 12U 70-pound bracket losing his first two matches by fall.

Losing to Wentzville’s Charles Benwell in the consolation side of the bracket, Faulkner saw him go on to place fourth in the tournament.

Gus Branson drew a bye to the second round of the 12U 135-pound bracket only to see his season ends after a pair of losses in his first two matches.

Mason Turner was also looking to close his OWC career with a medal in the 14U 135-pound weight class.

Defeating Logan Swopes (Greater Heights) by technical fall (16-0) and Rashawn Siemsen (Agape Wrestling) by fall in 1:20, Turner then lost his next two matches leaving him two wins shy of the top six.

Will Coppedge was next to represent OWC in the 14U 165-pound bracket.

Losing by fall in his second-round match, Coppedge stayed alive in the consolation side of the bracket with a win by fall in :53 over Alex Williams (Francis Howell) before being eliminated by Neosho’s Grayson Thurlow via a 15-5 major decision.

Corey Perkins was the last OWC wrestler competing at state in the 14U 285-pound weight class.

Losing a 9-2 decision to Chase Fagan (Terminator Wrestling) in the second round, Perkins was then eliminated Odessa’s Dylan Porter via pin in 1:22.

Fagan went on to place fifth in the tournament while Porter ended up being eliminated one win shy of the top six.
