WARDSVILLE — Another win over Fatima’s Lady Comets.
Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirls were going for exactly that last Thursday night during the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 10 Girls Basketball Tournament hosted by Blair Oaks High School.
Defeating Fatima on their home floor 51-34 back in mid-January, Flanagan’s Dutchgirls looked to duplicate that outcome only this time on a neutral floor.
Leading 44-41 on a Camryn Caldwell basket with 6:53 remaining in the fourth quarter, Owensville picked the wrong time to go cold on offense.
Fatima ended the game on a 13-2 run to end Owensville’s season at 18-9 after a 54-46 loss.
“We weren’t able to hit shots when we needed to and Fatima did,” Flanagan said. “It is hard to beat a good team twice let alone once. Fatima was simply the better team tonight and I wish them good luck going on.”
Audrey Quilacio helped the Dutchgirls draw first blood with a 3-pointer at the 7:22 mark of the first quarter for an early 3-0 lead.
Fatima’s Kaitlyn Plassmeyer answered with a 3-pointer and a subsequent 4-point play putting the Lady Comets in front 7-3.
Emma Daniels and Camryn Caldwell both hit baskets for Owensville tying the game at 7-7 with 5:25 for the first period.
OHS then saw the Lady Comets close the first quarter on a 14-3 run leaving them in a 21-10 hole entering the second quarter.
Trailing 23-12 with 6:38 until halftime, Owensville made their move to get back in the game.
Ella Gehlert started a 12-0 run with a basket at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter before five points from Emma Daniels and Quilacio put the Dutchgirls back in front 24-23 with :27 until halftime.
Emma Bower answered with a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give Fatima a 26-24 halftime lead.
Battling through two lead changes in the third quarter, Owensville emerged with a 39-38 lead entering the fourth quarter in spite of a Alli Robertson 3-pointer for Fatima at the third-quarter buzzer.
Quilacio answered Robertson with her third 3-pointer of the game at the 7:40 mark of the fourth quarter putting the Dutchgirls back up by four at 42-38.
Now leading 44-41 with 6:53 left on a Caldwell bucket, Owensville went on to go over six minutes without a point while Fatima scored 13 unanswered to end OHS’ season.
Emma Daniels led the Dutchgirls with 18 points, three steals, two rebounds and two blocked shots.
Quilacio finished with 11 points and four rebounds while Caldwell added nine points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Gehlert chipped in eight points while Ali Daniels added four assists and four rebounds in spite of being held scoreless.
