Twenty-eight professional artists from around the country will be painting outdoors across southern Gasconade County Oct. 20-24 during the four-day Fall Plein Air Event, competing for $6,000 in donated prizes courtesy of local sponsors.

Plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view, according to a release from the promoters of the contest — the Gasconade County Fall Plein Air Event Committee and Artworks on Main. This is the third year for the fall competition which will include painting locations in the Owensville and Rosebud rural areas and town sites.

Locations where artists will be painting include Peaceful Valley Lake, Cool Cow, Owensville, White Mule Winery, and Rosebud.

The public is invited to watch the artists as they create paintings of local scenery.

“We have 28 artists coming for the week to paint Owensville and the surrounding area, Peaceful Valley, Cool Cow Cheese, Rosebud area and at The White Mule,” said Suzie Jost. “Artists come from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado and Missouri. Everyone is welcome to come out and watch the artists paint, ask questions and get to know them.  It is fascinating to watch them paint.  Artwork can be purchased ‘off the easel’ or each evening at Seasons of Faith Church except for Friday evening — that sale will be at The White Mule.”

Artwork will be on sale at Seasons of Faith Church from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday. Pieces will be sold from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. Sunday sales will be at White Mule Winery, U.S. 50 between Drake and Rosebud, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

New this year is a Quick Paint Event which will be held on Friday, Oct. 22 at White Mule Winery from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Local amateur artists, ages 13 and up, will have the opportunity to experience a Plein Air event and also compete for cash prizes.

A complete listing of the scheduled events for the competitions is at the event website www.gasconadefallpleinair.com or by visiting Art Works on Main in Owensville.
