A $725,000 bridge replacement project on Route J over First Creek scheduled to begin Monday began Tuesday due to heavy rainfall. A mandatory detour will be necessary around the site.
The 83-year-old bridge, located one half mile west of Route 100, south of the city of Gasconade, has reached a state where replacement is necessary, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s engineers planning the project. E&C Bridge LLC out of California, Mo., is building the new structure.
It was constructed in 1938 with a width of 22 feet and length spanning the creek of 166-feet, 2-inches. The new bridge will be 24 feet wide and just over a foot longer at 167-feet, 3-inches. According to MoDOT, the last inspection of the structure listed noted the structure’s bridge deck was deteriorating and the structure overall was in “serious condition.”
Route J at the bridge is expected to be closed to traffic for up to three months while the work takes place. Motorists will need find alternate routes while the bridge replacement is in progress, MoDOT officials said.
The bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state. This work is weather permitting and could be delayed.
Roadway improvements are included in the contract which includes approximately 44 feet of new pavement to the east and 121 feet west of the bridge.
