Gasconade R-2 board schedules July 30 workshop to review district project priorities

Gasconade County R-2 Board of Education scheduled a 5:30 p.m. workshop for July 30 at the Administration Building to review priority projects identified by the district’s Long-Range Facility Planning Committee.

The committee’s list of priorities was provided for review in the board’s May meeting packet.

The committee, made up of about 40 community members, business owners, district representatives, and other volunteers, created the lists after touring all four district buildings and identifying features that need to be remodeled, expanded or improved.

Superintendent Dr. Jeri Kay Hardy said board members were provided a list of suggested projects, but have not prioritized them. That action will take place at the public workshop.

“They will look at the projects and put the ones that the committee has put together, and decide the ones they want to do,” Hardy said. “They will also look at the projects the committee considered to be priorities.”

The board’s final list will be used for the district’s 2026 no-tax-increase bond issue request to the voters.

After voters failed to pass a bond issue in 2023 and 2024, the district reviewed its finances, and the board is choosing priority projects from the previous list that need addressing sooner rather than later.

“If there are any projects we can do without a bond, they can look at those,” Hardy said.

The board has taken several steps since last fall to seek the best finance-friendly solutions to its problems. The Owensville High School (OHS) main gym replacement bleachers project was completed over the summer. The Career Technical Education (CTE) expansion project to provide upgrades to the automotive technology program was completed with a Local Access Grant. The district received a second grant for the expansion of the CTE screen printing class.

“The board is going to be looking at other projects that were considered priority by the committee,” Hardy said. “We have bids out now for lighting on the football field, to refurbish the Gerald Elementary School (GES) gym, and remodel the nurse’s office at OHS because there is no bathroom for students who need access to that, and the teachers’ lounge bathroom at GES.”

The GES gym remodel would include flooring, bleachers, paint and lighting.

“Those are all things we have bid out at this time — all out of the capital projects fund,” Hardy said.

The board plans to review the projects list and choose priorities at 5:30 p.m. on July 30 at the Administration Building.

“The board will pick the projects that they would spend the debt service money on,” Hardy said.
