Gasconade County’s two state representatives have received their committee appointments during the House’s brief and COVID-abbreviated opening week of the 101st General Assembly.
State Rep. Aaron Griesheimer, R-Washington, was selected by House Speaker Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, to serve as the chair of the House Committee on Emerging Issues.
The House Committee on Emerging Issues was first created with the purpose of considering and reporting on any bills and matters referred to it relating to general or miscellaneous issues as determined by the House Speaker, according to a release from Griesheimer’s office.
“I am extremely grateful to Speaker Vescovo for entrusting me with this enormous responsibility,” Griesheimer said. “I am anxious to work with the committee members to thoroughly review legislation which will help move Missouri forward. I can’t express enough my gratitude to Speaker Vescovo for his trust.”
The committee is responsible for reviewing each piece of legislation approved by committees, and “ultimately decide if each bill should move on to the House floor for discussion,” according to the release.
Griesheimer’s 61st House District includes the northern portion of Gasconade County.
The southern half of Gasconade County has new representation in the House for the first time in eight years as Bruce Sassmann, a Republican from Bland, was sworn in Jan. 6 to his first term in the 62nd District.
Vescovo assigned Sassmann to three different committees for the 101st General Assembly.
His first assignment is the Special Committee for Small Business.
Chaired by Rep. Nick Schroer and Rep. Danny Busick, the Special Committee for Small Business includes 13 members to discuss and propose legislative solutions to help small businesses in Missouri, according to a release from House Communications staff.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to serve small businesses in the Missouri legislature,” Sassmann is quoted as saying. “Small business is a foundation stone for the Missouri economy and the lifeblood for nearly half of all Missourians. This is one of the most important committees in our Missouri legislature.”
Sassmann has also been selected to serve on the Special Committee on Tourism. This committee chaired by Representatives Brad Hudson and Travis Smith will consider issues related to one of the state’s biggest industries.
“Tourism is the second largest industry in the state, and I’m anxious to offer legislative support to enhance our state’s recreational opportunities,” said Sassmann.
Sassmann was also appointed to the Conservation and Natural Resources Committee.
“Our Missouri heritage, history and culture are important to all Missourians, and this committee provides the legislative opportunity to safeguard the very best of Missouri,” said Sassmann.
On Thursday evening the Missouri House announced it was canceling session for the week of Jan. 18 through 22. House leadership issued the following statement:
“Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the building, we are exercising an abundance of caution to protect members, staff, and visitors by canceling session next week. Our goal is to return to work the following week.”
