HERMANN — Soil was ceremoniously turned last week to signal the start of an 8-month effort to expand the Gasconade County Historical Society’s Archives Center in downtown Hermann.
General contractor Glenn Englert said the project would begin with excavation work this month and that the project is expected to be finished in about eight months. The expansion will be on the north side of the existing structure at the corner of Schiller and 4th streets.
The $2-million addition will provide badly needed space for the Archives Center, which contains a variety of historically significant documents and other items ranging from marriage licenses to land transactions and other records retrieved from the Gasconade County courthouse, which also is suffering a storage space crunch.
“It’s a beautiful project, something that’s needed,” said Historical Society President Phyllis Gross prior to the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Lois Kruse, who has been involved with the Historical Society for decades, pointed to the local support the project has received, including several large gifts of funds.
“Their roots are also in the county,” she said of some of the large donors.
