HERMANN — Visitation and a memorial service have been scheduled for this weekend for Jack Schneider, 17, a Hermann High School student who was killed last week in a truck crash on Highway 19 south of Drake.

The visitation will be held Saturday, March 22, from noon to 6 p.m. at Hermann Middle School. A memorial service will be held at HMS on Sunday, March 23, at 3 p.m.

According to a revised report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Schneider, the son of Lucas and Andrea Schneider of Berger, was killed when the 2010 Ford pickup truck he was driving northbound traveled off the right side of the roadway in an attempt to avoid a tractor-trailer tanker unit which was heading south. Schneider then over-corrected and traveled into the path of the tanker truck.

The report said both vehicles went off the roadway and both vehicles caught fire. The collision occurred at 1:32 last Wednesday afternoon (March 12) a half-mile south of AufderHeide Road, the Patrol report said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer rig was identified by the Highway Patrol only as a 62-year-old man from Sunrise Beach, Mo. He reportedly suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported by Owensville Area Ambulance District personnel to Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City for treatment. Scheider was pronounced dead at the scene by Gasconade County Coroner Jeff Arnold at 1:42 p.m. and the road remained closed until 5 a.m. Thursday.

Schneider was active in the Hermann High School Chapter of FFA and reportedly was returning to Hermann with a load of supplies for the chapter he had picked up in Owensville. In his honor today (Wednesday), FFA chapter members at Hermann, Owensville, and Vienna high schools were among 14 area chapters which were scheduled to be wearing official dress clothes to school.
