FULTON — Divide and conquer.
That will be the story later this week for fans of Hermann High School Cross Country and volleyball.
While the volleyball team was punching their ticket to this weekend’s Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Girls Volleyball Championships in Cape Girardeau, both the cross country Bearcats and Lady Bearcats were looking to do the same during the MSHSAA Class 2, District 3 Cross Country meet at Fulton High School.
Coming into the meet, Hermann’s Bearcats were in the mix to possibly post a top-four team finish allowing all seven runners the chance to race this Saturday during the 2024 MSHSAA Cross Country Championships at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.
Passing Clark County’s Mason McDaniel in the closing meters of the race, Hermann junior Nolan Kopp cross the finish line claiming an individual district title with a winning time of 16:35.70.
Joining Kopp in the top 30 earning All-District honors included fellow Bearcats Conner Manning (12th, 18:00.25), Ryker Ash (18th, 18:24.29), Nathan Menke (26th, 18:34.51) and Eric Chorley (29th, 18:36.41).
Fellow Bearcats that will also be racing in Columbia include Chase Branson (31st, 18:55.70) and William Manning (35th, 18:59.02).
As a team, the Bearcats placed second with 71 points just behind South Shelby’s top team total of 55 points.
Also qualifying for state as team in the Class 2 boys race at Fulton were Elsberry’s Indians (76) and Russellville’s Indians (103).
Hermann’s Lady Bearcats had a much closer call looking to get back to Columbia as a team.
In spite of only having two girls in the top 30, the Lady Bearcats managed to grab the fourth-and-final team state qualifying spot with 115 points.
They finished behind Veritas Christian Academy (84), Whitfield (110) and Monroe City (114).
Earning All-District honors for the Lady Bearcats with their top-30 finishes were Alaina Heaney (10th, 22:00.00) and Cecilia Shepard (11th, 22:05.54).
Lady Bearcats that will be joining the All-District duo at state include Grace Berkemeyer (35th, 23:52.58), Lillian Vogelsang (48th, 24:36.03), Elaina Uthlaut (49th, 24:37.55) and Jocelyn Neill (57th, 25:08.33).
Hermann’s Lady Bearcats and Bearcats will race on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Columbia at 9 a.m., and 10:30 a.m., respectively.
