Highway 19 dog fight

Fresh off a 47-0 shutout of Eldon last Friday night, Nathan Cabot’s Owensville Dutchmen football team will see something they’ve never seen before.

Cuba’s Wildcats will enter the game with their first 2-0 start in program history.

They have victories over Sullivan (27-26) and Jefferson out of Festus (37-21).

Both quarterbacks are dual threats to either pass the ball or run it down the field.

Dutchmen junior quarterback Brendan Decker currently has 403 yards passing and 65 yards rushing compared to 455 yards passing and 141 yards rushing for Wildcat senior Mason Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer’s 141 yards rushing leads the Wildcats while senior Garret West lead Owensville on the ground with 86 yards rushing.

Among receivers, Cuba is led by senior Alan O’Neal who has nine catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns. OHS is led by junior Derek Brandt who has caught seven passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the football, Cuba is led by three players with double-digits tackles through two games.

Junior Connor Gipson leads the way with a team-high 24 tackles followed closely by senior Zack Minardi with 22 tackles.

Rounding out Cuba’s leading tackling trio is junior Dylan Keogh with 15 tackles.

Keogh and Gipson also both have four tackles for loss.

Owensville is led by TC Fisher and Brandt who both have a team-high 22 total tackles.

Garret West is also in double digits with 12 tackles.

Helping the Dutchmen record 11 tackles for loss with two each are Owen Holtzer, Bryor Bogle, Brandt and Fisher.

Among Cuba’s seven sacks so far this season, three players have two each in Wyatt Whittaker, Brian DeClue and Gipson.

Owensville is led by Logan Evans in the sack department with two. Landon Valley and Zibbie Whitaker also have a sack apiece.

Coming into their week-two showdown, Cuba has averaged 32 points per game on offense while allowing 23.5 points a contest on defense.

Owensville has limited its opponents to six points per game.
