A year-long celebration of Gasconade County’s 200th birthday begins in March with a Courthouse gala and includes as a photo contest and a caravan of new and classic vehicles traveling from one end of the county to the other.

Sponsored by the Gasconade County Historical Society, the Courthouse gala is set for Saturday, March 28, at 6 p.m. The limited-seating event will include appetizers, samples of the various wines produced in the county and a short program about Gasconade County, which was formally established Nov. 25, 1820, the year before Missouri became a state.

The semi-formal gathering is being planned for about 100 people, according to Phyllis Gross, who, along with Hope Mundwiller, is heading the Historical Society’s efforts at the kickoff event. Tickets for the gala are $25 each and are available at the Gasconade County Archives Center at Schiller and Fourth streets in Hermann. A location to purchase tickets in Owensville has yet to be determined, Gross said.

Information about reserving tickets can be obtained by calling 573-437-3174 or 573-486-2633.

“We’re hoping it will be a little bit upscale,” she said of the gala.

Later in the year, the Historical Society and River City Cruisers of Hermann are joining for a cruise that travels the length of the county. More information on this will be available later.

Also, a photo contest has started for residents to submit their favorite images of all things Gasconade County. “We’re going to choose the best ones and make them into a calendar,” Gross said.

The contest will run through November. An address for submitting photos will be announced.

The Historical Society is also producing articles about Gasconade County for newspapers published in the county.
