Fidelity Communications informed the City of Gerald it is investing $1.3 million to expand their fiber-optic network “throughout the city limits of Gerald and Rosebud,” in a letter dated April 5. 24 miles of fiber will be added to their system.
Public Works Director Nick Grube says that he expects his crew will need to mark utility lines before the project begins.
Fidelity’s website says the new technology could provide up to one gig, 1,000 Mbps. According to the webpage, this can allow multiple people in a home to “be gaming, streaming shopping, searching and so much more without hesitation.”
There are four phases of the project planned for Gerald and two for Rosebud.
Construction is due to begin next Monday, April 19. Crews will be removing the copper cable currently in use. The letter states, “This will allow us to continue to provide uninterrupted service to our customers while our new network is being constructed.”
