Cody M. Egelston, 26, Stillwell, Kan., who has been charged with first- and second-degree statutory sodomy that reportedly took place at Bland, turned himself in Aug. 31 to authorities at Cass County near Kansas City, Mo., after being told about the story appearing in the Osage County Unterrified Democrat.
The UD is a sister paper to The Republican and the Maries County Advocate which also covered the story last month.
“We do not know why he turned himself in, but we are glad that he did,” said Osage County Sheriff Mike Bonham.
An arrest warrant was issued the day Egelston surrendered to authorities, and Bonham sent deputies to retrieve him Friday.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Dennis Sutton, the investigation began Aug. 4 when he was told Egelston had been soliciting sexual favors from a juvenile. During the interview, a second juvenile disclosed that he and Egelston had been engaging in sexual intercourse.
A forensics interview was conducted with the juvenile in which it was confirmed that the victim had been sodomized the day before in a barn next to the residence. The alleged abuse had been occurring for approximately one year, at numerous locations on the property.
Egelston is being held at the Osage County Jail in Linn without bond. He filed a request Tuesday for a public defender to represent him. He did not have a court appearance scheduled as of late Tuesday afternoon.
The charges against Egelston include a class D felony (second degree) and an unclassified felony (first degree) alleging deviate sexual intercourse with a person less than 14 years old.
