Miskel endorses Schulte as top administrator

HERMANN —Retiring Gasconade County Presiding Commissioner Larry Miskel, R-Hermann, is endorsing Tim Schulte as his successor.

Schulte is being challenged in the Republican Party Primary Election for the top administrator’s position by David Slater of Swiss and Jerry Spurgeon of Owensville. With no Democrat filing for the post, the winner of the GOP primary will be the presumptive winner of the office.

Miskel issued a statement regarding his endorsement at the conclusion of last week’s County Commission session.

“With a considerable amount of thought and a little prayer I am endorsing Tim Schulte for Gasconade County Presiding Commissioner,” Miskel said in his printed statement. “Mr. Schulte has extensive experience in construction, facility management and working with multi-million-dollar budgets and continually demonstrates integrity and sound judgement.

“Mr. Slater, a long-time county employee, said he will straighten out the Road Department and fix the leak on the roof. During my decade as a county commissioner, he has never brought a problem or suggestion to my attention. The source of the leak has been determined and is scheduled for repair. Mr. Slater made an accusation to law enforcement that an associate commissioner stole county property and sold it for personal profit. After a lengthy investigation by the Missouri State Highway patrol, the allegations were determined to be unfounded. If Mr. Slater would have spent 30 minutes and made a couple of telephone calls he would have easily realized there was no basis for the allegation and the roof leak has been identified. In my opinion, a judgement issue has manifested itself with Mr. Slater.

“Mr. Spurgeon wants to be the senior county elected official and to date he has never made a Commission or Road Department meeting while I have been a commissioner. Previously, Mr. Spurgeon ran for county office as a Democrat; now he is running as a Republican. In my opinion, he is hoping the two candidates running from north county will split the vote and he hopes he will be elected, which I feel is an integrity issue.”

Miskel is capping a lengthy career in local government.

By the end of his term, he will have served 10 years on the County Commission, eight as presiding commissioner and two as the northern district associate commissioner. Prior to that, he served almost five years as mayor of Hermann and one year as a Hermann alderman.

Schulte said he was honored to have Miskel's endorsement in the race.

“I’m very pleased with Larry,” he told the Gasconade County Republican. “I think he has done a great job to get Gasconade County in the position that it’s in.”
