Fresh off a 41-37 overtime sectional win last Tuesday night against Strafford sparked by Camryn Caldwell’s “shot heard ‘round Owensville” to force bonus basketball, John VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchgirls looked to keep their postseason run going in Saturday’s Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4 Quarterfinal contest at home against Logan-Rogersville’s Lady Wildcats.
Leading 21-20 at halftime on an Ali Daniels bucket at the 17.2 mark of the second quarter, Owensville surrendered a 7-0 run to start the second half.
Down 32-26 with 7:30 remaining, Caldwell’s first bucket of the game and a Daniels’ 3-pointer trimmed the Logan-Rogersville lead to one at 32-31 with 5:05 remaining.
Unable to get any closer than that the rest of the way, Owensville saw their season end at 21-6 after a 46-35 quarterfinal loss to the Lady Wildcats.
“It’s tough to see your season end one win shy of going back to the final four,” Dutchgirl head coach John VanLeer said. “I’m so proud of how these girls kept fighting and never giving up even with shots not falling for us.”
Trailing 9-0 after Lady Wildcat sophomore Sidney Holland scored Logan-Rogersville’s first five points, a Brynn Wright 3-point play sparked a 10-6 run to close the gap for the Dutchgirls to 15-10 after one quarter.
Wright ended up accounting for seven of Owensville’s 10 first-quarter points while a Daniels’ 3-pointer made up for the rest.
Picking up where she left off in the first quarter, Wright opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer trimming the Lady Wildcat lead to 15-13 before another Daniels 3-pointer gave them their first lead of the game at 16-15 with 6:10 until halftime.
Seeing Logan-Rogersville score five points over the next minute to leave OHS trailing 20-16, Owensville ended the half with an answer of their own.
Daniels hit a free throw to make it 20-17 with 4:46 for the second quarter before a Wright bucket made it 20-19 at the midway point of the second period.
In the closing seconds of the first half, Daniels got a basket in the paint helping the orange and black to a 21-20 halftime lead.
Wright (12) and Daniels (9) combined for all 21 of Owensville’s first-half points.
Holland led the Lady Wildcats with five first-half points.
Field goals were tough to come by for both teams in the third quarter.
Both teams combined for just 14 points with 10 of them coming from the free-throw line.
A 7-1 Lady Wildcat run eventually left the Dutchgirls staring at a 29-26 deficit entering the fourth quarter.
Daniels hit five free throws in the final 3:05 of the third quarter to account for all of Owensville’s points to open the second half.
Able to claw their way back within one with 5:05 left, VanLeer’s Dutchgirls could not overcome a 9-0 Logan-Rogersville run that eventually ended another outstanding season of Owensville Dutchgirl basketball.
“Our goal all year has been to hold teams under 40 points,” VanLeer said. “We weren’t able to do that but that was a darn good team we just played.”
Daniels led the Dutchgirls in a losing cause with 18 points, five rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot.
Wright also reached double figures with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Caldwell added two points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal while Cameron Nowack added a point on a fourth-quarter free throw to go with two rebounds and two assists.
Millie MacPherson led Logan-Rogersville with 15 points while Reagan Rasmussen just missed a double double finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds.
“Owensville made us earn everything we got and then some,” Logan-Rogersville head coach Cory Watts said. “They were easily the best defensive team we faced all season. This was an awesome environment for a high school girls basketball game and I want to thank our fans for traveling and their fans for making this game a memorable experience for everyone.”
