Late at night Saturday, Feb. 29, a 54-year-old female from Sullivan reported to the front lobby of the Franklin County Adult Detention Center. She was there to drop off socks and t-shirts for her son, who is currently incarcerated.
Sheriff Steve Pelton says families of inmates are allowed to bring three white t-shirts, three pairs of white socks and three white briefs for an inmate so they may have undergarments for sanitary reasons.
A detention deputy collected the clothing and opened the packages, explaining that he had to inspect them before he could accept them. While inspecting the seams of the socks he observed that the seams had been tampered with and found small hard crystals, believed to be methamphetamine, concealed in the seam.
The deputy placed the woman under arrest for attempting to deliver a controlled substance into a jail.
Before entering the jail, the deputy asked the woman if she had any more drugs on her person. Initially she denied having anything, but eventually produced a small glass jar containing one crystal rock, also believed to be methamphetamine.
The woman’s name is being withheld pending formal charges once lab results are obtained.
