BELLE — As if 10 days between games wasn’t a long enough wait for Todd Rehmert’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball team, they sat for four hours watching the junior varsity boys and girls along with the varsity girls face Belle before getting their turn on the court against the host Tigers.

Overcoming a 32-27 halftime deficit, the Dutchmen were able to overcome all of the adversity in front of them by posting a 63-54 victory over Belle for the second time in as many meetings.

“I was afraid being off for 10 days might have hurt us,” Rehmert said. “I’m proud of our team for stepping up and playing well tonight in spite of the long lay off.”

Behind five points from Brady Smith, Owensville ended the first quarter with an 11-6 lead.

As the second quarter gradually moved along, Owensville’s lead shrunk until Belle tied the game at 24-24 on a Levi Fortner 3-pointer at the 1:24 mark of the quarter.

From there, the Tigers ended the first half on an 8-3 run to take a 32-27 halftime lead on their home floor.

Trailing 36-35, Austin Terry hit an open jumper putting the Dutchmen back on top 37-36 with 2:35 for the third quarter.

From there, Owensville closed the quarter on a 9-2 to take a 46-38 lead into the final eight minutes of basketball from Maries County.

Keeping their lead in double digits virtually the entire fourth quarter, OHS went on to their second victory over Belle in a 10-day span.

Doing half of his damage from the charity stripe, Cason Gray shot 10-14 from the free-throw line on his way to a game-high 20 points for Owensville.

Following Gray closely was Trevor Abernathy with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Smith made it a trio of double-digit scoring Dutchmen with 11 points. He made it a double double grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.

Before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter, Terry finished with six points all in the second half.

Zaid Epstein added five points while Daxton Mehrhoff chipped in a fourth-quarter bucket for two points.

Before a knee injury ended his night in the third quarter, Brett Butler led Belle with a team-high 17 points. Levi Fortner also reached double figures for the Tigers with 12 points.

Quinton Martin posted solid numbers for Belle with nine points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

OHS will return to action later this week in a Thursday JV and Friday varsity twin bill at Hermann.
