New app in the works for Lonigro’s Supermarket

Luke Lonigro, manager at Lonigro’s Supermarket in Gerald, told The Republican that a new app will soon be available for customers to shop and pay for groceries on their phone. He hopes the new app, freshshop, will be available to local shoppers by the end of the week.

Owner Larry Lonigro said on Tuesday that he was considering hiring a full-time employee just to take care of the phone orders that are flooding in each day. Lonigro is eager to provide the service, but it is a cumbersome one. He said the demand for curb-side pick up is growing each day.

The new phone app, which can be downloaded now, will greatly simplify the process. On the app, shoppers can choose exactly the products they wish to purchase, then pay using a debit or credit card. The app will notify them when their order is available to pick up.

Larry reported he received his first full truck order since he took over the business again in October 2015. Business is booming and groceries are flying off the shelves, still. There were at least 10 employees doing nothing but transferring the order from truck to the shelves on Tuesday.

The regular vendor delivered a good amount of toilet paper, but Larry had already found a vendor that delivered rolls of individually wrapped paper last week. There is still plenty of both kinds.

One of the store’s suppliers sent notice that even though they had hired more help, increased hours and even added several tractor-trailers to their fleet, they still cannot keep up with demand.

It’s a hectic time for sure, but the kindness of the customers goes a long way to relieving the stress. One fellow businesswoman surprised the overworked crew with some homemade banana bread. Others just simply take a minute to say thank you for the hard work.
