OHS seniors earns All-State honors in last state meet

COLUMBIA — For Bailey Rasmussen and Jacob Luther, they had a simple goal.

Both of them were looking to end their Owensville High School track and field careers with medals from the 2019 Class 3 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships Saturday at Mizzou’s Walton Stadium in Columbia.

Competing simultaneously, both athletes overcome adversity to achieve their goal.

For Rasmussen, prior to this year, she qualified for state twice but did not make the finals of the discus.

This year, she was able to buck that trend with a mark of 112 feet, three inches on her first preliminary throw placing her fifth going into the finals.

“I just wanted to make the finals,” Rasmussen said. “I knew after that I only had to beat one person after that.”

In spite of having to settle for her 112-03 mark as her best throw, Rasmussen placed seventh in the state in the Class 3 girls discus giving her that elusive state medal.

“It feels amazing to I was finally able to get an all state medal,” Rasmussen said. “I knew I had one last chance and I did what I knew how to do.”

On the other side of the track, Luther was battling an ankle injury looking to end his OHS career with a state medal in the Class 3 Boys Pole Vault.

Even though his lone make of the event came at 12-03, Luther managed to finish in a tie for eighth.

“This was not how I wanted to end my career, but I feel fortunate to finish with another state medal,” Luther said. “It was nerve wracking waiting for the final results.”

OHS head track coach Matt Candrl had high praises for both seniors.

“Jacob is a strong enough competitor that even when he’s not at his best, he’s still able to be an all-state athlete,” Candrl said. “You always want a senior to come out all state and Bailey (Rasmussen) did that.”
