OHS Track teams finish fourth, sixth at Blair Oaks Invitational

Opening their track and field season last week, Matt Candrl’s Owensville High School squad competed in meets last Tuesday at Montgomery County and Friday at Blair Oaks High School in Wardsville.

Using the Montgomery County meet as a competition for OHS’ youngest athletes, Candrl saw several competitors post top-eight finishes good enough to score team points.

Freshman Alan Kopp competed in three events posting top-three finishes in all of them.

His best showing came in the 300-meter hurdles with a first-place time of 47.03. He also took second place in the 110-meter hurdles posting a time of 18.00. Clearing the bar at 5-02 in the high jump, Kopp finished tied for third.

Trenten Watkins also scored for OHS in the 110m hurdles with a seventh-place time of 21.67.

Showing the way for the Dutchmen relay teams at Montgomery County was the 4x400-meter relay team of Ashton Kramme, Braedn Stone, Reagan Wehmeyer and Watkins with a fourth-place time of 4:11.52.

Just missing the top eight and a team point with a ninth-place time of 10:53.02 in the boy’s 4x800-meter relay was the OHS quartet of Christian Lowes, Ethan Poertner, Devon Farris and Stone.

One of three athletes to clear 8-06 in the boys pole vault, Kramme picked up five team points with his fourth-place finish.

Brandon Allen also cleared 6-06 to place ninth in the pole vault.

Justin Roethemeyer (11th, 73-02), Harm Rademacher (15th, 63-07.75) and Wesley Kandlbinder (16th, 63-07) posted top-16 marks in the boys javelin.

Tristan Heflin missed the top 10 in the boys discus by just over two feet with a 12th-place mark of 91-07.25.

As a team, Owensville racked up 36.5 points to place eighth.

On the girl’s side of the ledger at Montgomery County, Candrl’s Dutchgirls scored in 12 out of a possible 19 events.

Three of them saw OHS individuals or relay teams place third.

Kyah Weirich won her heat of the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:17.69 good for third place overall.

At the end of the meet in the girl’s 4x400-meter relay, the Dutchgirl team of Arissa Huff, Emma Skornia, Wisdom Zumsteg and Weirich posted a third-place time of 5:23.10.

Skornia added to her leg of the 4x400m relay with a third-place throw of 70-05.5 in the javelin.

Scoring along with Skornia in the javelin were Dutchgirl teammates Olivia Vandegriffe (6th, 69-10) and Keira Hendrix (8th, 63-04.75). Emily Copeland also posted a 13th-place mark of 57-05.

Huff added a fourth-palce time of 6:50.37 in the 1600-meter run to her leg of the 4x400-meter relay.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Kyra Binkhoelter (6th, 21.46) and Addison Wright (7th, 22.21) both scored team points for Owensville.

Wright (5th, 1:02.49), Kyra Binkhoelter (6th, 1:03.60) and Anna Heidbrink (7th, 1:05.13) took three of the seven scoring positions in the 300-meter hurdles.

Adding to the success of the 4x400m relay, the Dutchgirl 4x100-meter relay team of Alexus Wenkel, Keira Hendrix, Caleigh Crofford and Grace McFalls posted a sixth-place time of 1:01.46.

Placing fifth in 12:37.16 in the 4x800m relay was the Dutchgirl team of Huff, Skornia, Zumsteg and Weirich.

Heidbrink improved on her place in the 300m hurdles by taking sixth in the high jump clearing 4-02.

Crofford also cleared 6-06 in the pole vault to place fifth followed by McFalls and Megan Binkhoelter who both cleared 6-0 to place sixth and seventh respectively.

Out of nine scoring teams, Owensville racked up 63 points to finish in a tie for sixth-place with Warrenton.

Friday at the Blair Oaks Invitational in Wardsville, Candrl’s Dutchgirls (85) edged Fatima (83) for fourth place in the team standings out of 11 schools.

Showing the way for OHS on the girl’s side was Katie Candrl winning the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles to go along with a third-place finish in the pole vault.

Kate Angell also left Falcon country with gold by winning the high jump.

Senior Bailey Rasmussen started her final year of OHS track with a second-place finish in the discus.

Also placing third was the Dutchgirl 4x800-meter relay team of Sophia Ashner, Kendra Hults, Mekayla Gibson and Alexis Branson.
