OHS wrestlers give Howard first dual win

One night removed from a pair of tough duals at Rolla against the host Bulldogs and Washington’s Blue Jays, Dustin Howard’s Owensville High School wrestlers opened the home portion of their season Friday night in front of the home fans in a tri-meet against Potosi and Sullivan.

In the first dual of the night, the host Dutchmen faced off against the visiting Trojans from Potosi.

Wrestling unopposed at 106 pounds, Michael Martin gave Owensville a 6-0 lead in the team score.

Potosi’s Tanner Adamson evened the score at 6-6 wrestling unopposed at 113 pounds.

Squaring off in the first contested match of the night at 120 pounds was OHS’ Aries Nicholas and Potosi’s Toby Walker.

Nicholas went on to win the match by fall in :58 putting the Dutchmen on top 12-6.

Double forfeits at 126 and 132 pounds led to another win by forfeit for Owensville.

Xander Lansford earned six points for OHS wrestling uncontested at 138 pounds.

Senior Kolby Jahnsen and Trojan grappler Steven Riddell were next on the mat at 145 pounds.

Opening his final home meet as a Dutchmen, Jahnsen won the match by fall in :45.

At 152 pounds, Owensville’s Gabe Soest faced off against Zackary Lyons.

In the first match that went into the second period, Soest went on to score six more points with a win by fall in 2:52.

Jackson Carrell gave OHS six more points wrestling unopposed at 160 pounds.

170-pound junior Alan Kopp pinned Potosi’s Garrett Valle in 2:49 giving the Dutchmen a commanding 42-6 lead in team scoring.

Next on the mats at 182 pounds was Dutchmen Christopher Stockton and Potosi’s Levi Courtney.

In the first match that went the full three periods, Stockton dropped a 16-7 major decision to Courtney.

Dakota Martin (195) and Brent Helmig (220) both earned victories for OHS wrestling unopposed.

Competing in the final match of the first dual at 285 pounds was Dutchmen Kohl Grannemann and Trojan Caleb Land.

Even though Grannemann was pinned in 1:35, Owensville still won the dual by a team score of 54-16.

Sullivan defeated Potosi 78-0 in the middle dual of the night.

Concluding the meet, the host Dutchmen squared off against the defending Four Rivers Conference (FRC) team champions in Sullivan’s Eagles.

Before varsity action took place, five junior varsity matches were contested on the mats.

JV Dutchmen grapplers wrestling hard but falling in their respective matches were Jordan Bialczyk, Kaden Loeb, Paul Million, Eli Wilson and Kyle O’Neal.

One girls match saw Dutchgirl senior Haven Sanders face off against Sullivan’s Loghan Bogert.

Controlling the match early, Sanders went on to win it by fall in 1:43 giving her two wins on the night following her win by forfeit over Potosi.

Starting the dual with Sullivan at 120 pounds, Nicholas took on Dominic Ransom.

Pinned in 1:26, Nicholas finished the night at 1-1.

Trailing 18-0 after two open weight classes, Lansford took on Sullivan’s Adam Peregoy looking to get OHS on the board.

Winning a hard-fought 11-10 decision, Lansford earned three team points for the Dutchmen.

At 145 pounds, Jahnsen dropped a 14-8 decision to Sullivan’s Colton Brendel giving him a 1-1 record on senior night.

Soest and Carrell were both pinned in their matches against Sullivan leading up to Kopp’s second match at 170 pounds.

Winning an 11-1 major decision over Dayton Skaggs, Kopp snapped a three-match win streak by the Eagles.

Stockton overcame his loss against Potosi with a win by fall over Sullivan’s Austin Brock in 2:30 at 182 pounds.

Dakota Martin needed only :19 to win his match over Jacob Patton at 195 pounds.

Helmig was pinned in 1:28 by Sullivan’s Kyler Martin before Grannemann and SHS’ Jeremiah Rodriguez battled in the final contested match of the dual at 285 pounds.

Trailing throughout the match, Grannemann caught Rodriguez on his back winning the match by fall in 3:49.

Michael Martin won his second match of the meet by forfeit as Sullivan was open at 106 pounds.

“All of our guys wrestled hard tonight,” Howard said.
