For Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen wrestler and Zach Bollman’s Dutchgirl wrestlers, their season-opening tri-meet Thursday against Washington and Rolla proved to be a learning experience against a pair of strong programs.

Facing Washington’s Blue Jays in the first dual of the night, OHS fell to Washington by a team score of 66-18.

Scoring victories by fall for the Dutchmen against the Blue Jays were Conner Roach at 120 pounds, Dezmyn Moore at 145 pounds and Landon Kramme at 182 pounds.

Roach and Kramme picked up their first varsity victories as they are both freshman grapplers.

Dutchmen pinned against the Blue Jays included Aries Nicholas (132), Gabe Soest (152), Gerrit VanBerkel (160), Alan Kopp (170), Eli Wilson (195), Brent Helmig (220) and Kohl Grannemann (285).

In the girls dual between the Dutchgirls and Lady Blue Jays, Washington showed why they earned third place in the state as a team last year defeating Owensville 78-6 in team scoring.

Josie Gerlemann picked up the lone victory for the Dutchgirls at 159 pounds as Washington was open in that weight class.

Other Dutchgirl wrestlers competing against the Lady Blue Jays included Jersey Reynolds, Elizabeth Adams, Hannah Berkaw, McKenzy Echols, Bailee Dare, Emily Krause and Kelby Schoenfeld.

Following duals between Rolla and Washington, Owensville returned to the mat to take on Rolla’s Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs in the final dual of the tri-meet.

Going for his second win of the night, Roach dominated Rolla’s Brayden Squires defeating him by technical fall 15-0.

Rolla took advantage of two open weight classes in addition to winning four contested matches to take a 36-5 lead in team scoring.

Kopp bounced back from his earlier loss to Washington pinning Rolla’s Wyatt Waneka in 1:59 at 170 pounds.

Seeing his freshman teammate go 2-0 on the night, Kramme looked to do the same at 182 pounds against Noah Smith.

Needing less than a minute, Kramme pinned his Bulldog opponent in :46.

Rolla won the final five matches with three contested and two uncontested to top team scoring 66-17.

Capping the long night of wrestling were Owensville’s Dutchgirls and Rolla’s Lady Bulldogs.

Reynolds scored his first victory as a Dutchgirl wrestler pinning Rolla’s Bridgett Ragan at 115 pounds.

Later in the dual, Dare made it a trio of freshman scoring their first varsity wrestling victory with a win by fall at 174 pounds over Rolla’s Katherine Arnold.
