Throughout action last week during their respective tournaments, Owensville Middle School (OMS) basketball teams coached by Kayla Huebner and Matt Kramme looked to bring home medals and hardware from St. James and Owensville respectively.
Huebner’s seventh-grade Dutchgirls reached the championship game of the St. James Tournament against the host Lady Tigers after defeating Sullivan and Washington in the first two rounds.
In the championship game at St. James, Owensville trailed 21-2 at halftime before settling for second-place hardware after a 34-17 loss to the host Lady Tigers.
Jayde Weirich led the Dutchgirls scoring all 10 of her team-high points in the second half.
Teagan Harris added four points followed closely with three points from Zoie Barnes and two points on free throws from Trinity Massman.
Semifinal action from St. James saw Owensville turn a 14-11 halftime lead against Washington into a 22-18 victory.
Weirich led the orange and black scoring 11 of her game-high 14 points in the first half.
Massman added six points all on free throws to go along with a second-quarter bucket from Barnes for two points.
First-round action last Monday saw the Dutchgirls face Sullivan for the third time this season.
Leading 19-4 at halftime, Owensville went on for their third win over the Lady Eagles by a final score of 27-8.
Weirich led the way scoring all eight of her team-leading points in the first half.
Madisyn Skornia followed with four points to go along with three points apiece from Allison Evans and Massman.
Adding two points each were Kiera Hamm, Paislee Basham and Zaylie Gromer.
Back home in Owensville, Kramme’s eighth-grade Dutchgirls fell 44-6 last Tuesday in first-round action of their annual home tournament at Owensville Elementary School.
Kylie Barnes led Kramme’s Dutchgirls with four points while Bria Schreiber chipped in two points.
Matched up with St. James in the consolation semifinals last Wednesday, Owensville fell to the Lady Tigers 44-2 with Schreiber spoiling St. James’ bid for a shutout by hitting a basket in the fourth quarter.
