A doubleheader sweep in front of their classmates.

That is what Owensville Middle School Dutchmen basketball teams coached by Jarrett Payne and Shane Hunt were after last Wednesday during their annual daytime twin bill against the visiting St. James Tigers at Owensville High School.

Trailing 12-3 after one quarter, Payne’s seventh-grade Dutchmen saw the deficit balloon into double digits before halftime of their 47-8 loss to the visiting Tigers.

Jax Johnston hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half giving him a team-leading six points while Charlie Katsov rounded out the Dutchmen scoring with a second-quarter bucket for two points.

Gabe Medlock led the Dutchmen on the glass pulling down a team-high six rebounds while Katsov also led the orange and black with three steals.

Brogan Clancy, Katsov and Johnston also each had an assist.

Isaac Smith led St. James with a near triple double effort of 22 points, 13 rebounds and six steals in seventh-grade action.

For Hunt’s eighth-grade Dutchmen, they were looking to end the 2022 portion of their season with an unblemished 7-0 record following a win over their Phelps County foes.

Opening the game on a 9-2 run, Owensville needed an 8-1 run over the final 1:06 of the first quarter for a 17-9 lead after six minutes of basketball.

Building their lead throughout the game, OMS picked up their seventh-grade counterparts by taking the eighth-grade contest 43-23.

Moments into the second quarter, a Bryce Kramme 3-pointer bumped the Dutchmen lead into double digits at 20-9 with 5:47 for the first half.

Baskets by Brady Watson and Chase Crosby capped a 7-0 run to open the second quarter giving the eighth-grade Dutchmen a 24-9 lead at the 3:50 mark of the second quarter.

St. James answered with a 5-0 run trimming the lead to 10 before Crosby scored with :51 for the half helping OMS keep their lead above 10 points at halftime.

Third-quarter scoring came at a premium as both teams combined for seven points.

Crosby scored all four Dutchmen points helping the orange and black to a 31-19 lead six minutes away from a 7-0 start to the season.

Tripling St. James 12-4 in the fourth quarter, Owensville went on to post a 20-point victory.

Crosby showed the way for the Dutchmen with a game-high 16 points to go along with two blocked shots.

Scoring five of his seven points in the first half, Watson added five rebounds and four steals to his point total.

Kramme hit a pair of first-half 3-pointers to finish with six points, four rebounds and two blocks.

Brody Slinkard chipped in four points to go along with three points apiece from Wyatt Lewis and Keigan Glaser.

Kylen Menz and Koen Brooks each added two points for OMS.
