Seeing their 7th grade counterparts turn back New Haven 52-11, Shane Hunt’s Owensville 8th grade Dutchmen basketball team looked to complete a season-opening doubleheader road sweep along Highway 100 last Tuesday night against the host Shamrocks.

Trailing 30-28 after three quarter, Owensville piled up 20 fourth-quarter points helping them to a 48-43 come-from-behind victory in their road and season opener.

Playing to an 8-8 tie after one quarter, Hunter Downey paced OMS’ 8th grade Dutchmen with four points.

He also scored four of Owensville’s eight second-quarter points to help them stay within striking distance of the Shamrocks trailing 20-16 at halftime.

Edging New Haven 12-10 in the third quarter, Hunt’s Dutchmen trimmed their deficit to two points at 30-28 entering the final six minutes of basketball.

Behind 10 more points from Downey, Owensville completed their second-half comeback.

Scoring 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, Downey utilized his tall frame to rack up points in the paint.

Tanner Mogensen added six points to go along with five markers apiece from Cohen Dare and Grayson Lairmore.

Rounding out the 8th grade Dutchmen scoring against New Haven with two points each were the orange and black quartet of Lucas Staton, Elliott Phillips, Braxton Perkins and Tucker Crosby.

Jarett Payne’s 7th grade Dutchmen jumped out to a 24-1 lead after one quarter before going on to a 52-11 victory over their Highway 100 opponents to the northeast.

Outscored 8-3 in the second quarter, Owensville returned the favor by outscoring the Shamrocks 25-2 in the second half.

Brayden Oldfather led Payne’s Dutchmen netting 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter.

Will Brune also reached double figures scoring six of his 10 points in the first quarter.

Trace Lange just missed making it three double-digit Dutchmen scoring six of his eight points in the first quarter.

Ivan Phillips added four points followed by three points apiece from Josiah Gehlert and Brody Christensen.

Rounding out the 7th grade Dutchmen scoring with two points each were Ricky Ringeisen, Roman Crowe, Peyton Sells and Cord Tucker.

Hosting Steelville’s Cardinals last night (Tuesday) at Owensville Elementary School (OES), OMS Dutchmen basketball will host another Crawford County opponent tomorrow (Thursday) night in Cuba’s Wildcats beginning at 5:30 p.m., inside OES’ gym with seventh-grade action.
