Splitting a doubleheader two nights earlier at home against Pacific, Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchmen basketball teams coached by Jarret Payne and Shane Hunt welcomed Union’s Wildcats to Owensville Elementary School (OES) Thursday night for a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) home doubleheader.
Seeing their seventh-grade counterparts post a 32-25 come-from-behind victory, Hunt’s eighth-grade Dutchmen looked to bounce back from a 24-15 loss against Pacific last Tuesday night.
Nursing a 20-15 lead at halftime, Owensville used a 10-2 third-quarter run to grab a 30-17 lead with 1:48 for the third quarter on a Cohen Dare free throw.
Able to stay in front by double digits throughout the rest of the game, Hunt’s Dutchmen went on to post a 47-32 victory behind 17 points, five rebounds and four steals from Tanner Mogensen.
Hunter Downey added a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds while Grayson Lairmore just missed making it a trio of double-digit Dutchmen finishing with nine points.
Lucas Staton and Braxton Perkins each added four points while Dare (2) and Chase Heidbrink (1) both scored their points on free throws in the second half.
Parker Pracht and Isaiah Stahlman each led Union with 11 points.
Stahlman added five rebounds and five steals to his double-digit point total.
Payne’s seventh-grade Dutchmen took a 14-12 halftime lead after trailing the majority of the first half of their 32-25 victory Thursday night.
Ivan “The Terrible” Phillips led the seventh-grade Dutchmen with 11 points, five steals, two rebounds and two assists.
Trace Lange scored six of his eight points in the second half while adding four steals, three rebounds and three assists.
Ricky Ringeisen and Will Brune each added four points followed closely by the duo of Brayden Oldfather and Roman Crowe with two points.
Peyton Sells hit a first-quarter free throw for one point to round out the seventh-grade Dutchmen scoring against Union.
Ringeisen also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Hayes Rogers led Union with eight points.
Last Tuesday against Pacific, Hunt’s eighth-grade Dutchmen trailed 15-11 after three quarters but were outscored 9-4 in the fourth quarter of their 24-15 loss.
Mogensen scored all of his team-high six points in the second half while Staton and Lairmore each added three points.
Downey added two points and 11 rebounds followed closely by Elliott Phillips with one point on a third-quarter free throw.
Ryder Kientzy paced Pacific with 15 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Trailing 22-21 after three quarters, Payne’s seventh graders edged the Indians 12-8 to post a 33-30 victory.
Lange led the orange and black with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Brune followed with eight points to go along with six points each from Oldfather and Ivan Phillips.
Ringeisen added two points and 11 rebounds while Josiah Gehlert added a fourth-quarter free throw for one point.
Brody Franzen led Pacific with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Swept last Monday in a doubleheader at Washington, Hunt’s eighth graders fell 44-21 while Payne’s seventh graders dropped a 47-36 decision.
OMS Dutchmen basketball will close 2024 today (Wednesday) at 12:30 p.m., taking on St. James’ Tigers in the annual daytime hoops doubleheader between the two schools at Owensville High School (OHS) in front of the entire OMS student body.
