JEFFERSON CITY — Students from all over Missouri including Owensville Middle School were tested on their consumer and marketplace knowledge at the local LifeSmarts 2020 state competition, held Dec.3-4 at Providence Bank in Jefferson City.

State competition was sponsored by Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Missouri Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). There were eight middle school teams from across the state vying for the state title on Dec. 3 and 12 high school teams on Dec. 4. The competition was judged by distinguished volunteers who are experts in LifeSmarts’ five content areas, which are personal finance, consumer rights, health and safety, technology, and the environment.

The competition began online in October, with only the highest scoring teams advancing to the in-person state championship.

The Owensville Middle School SEEK program had two teams qualify to compete at the state event.

The first team was made up of eighth-graders Kendra Lay (team captain), Lily Steinbeck, Anya Binkhoelter, Layne Evans, and seventh-grader Jadan Zelch.

The second team included eighth-graders Jackie Payton (captain), Andrew Blankenship, seventh-grader Kyle Bollman, and sixth-graders Zack Barch and Chris Allen.

Team one won the day and was awarded the state championship plaque. This is the fourth year that OMS SEEK students have competed in the state LifeSmarts competition.

On Dec. 4, Owensville High School competed for the first time in the LifeSmarts competition. The team consisted of junior Austin Terry (team captain), and freshmen Abby Terry, Aurora Maher, Gabe Soest, and Emily Nichols. The team ended the day ranked sixth out of the 12 schools competing.

LifeSmarts was established in 1994 and is part of the National Consumers League, the nation’s pioneering consumer organization. The program is an educational opportunity that teaches students in grades 6 through 12 to be smart, responsible, and successful consumers. LifeSmarts has been active in Missouri since 2003, sponsored and run by Missouri FCCLA. State-wide competitions are locally coordinated by state partnering organizations. Winners of varsity competition are invited to the National LifeSmarts Championship in Washington, D.C., in April 2020.
