Advancing 15 wrestlers to Saturday’s Missouri USA Region D Wrestling Tournament at Moberly Area Community College, Owensville Wrestling Club (OWC) team members looked to finish in the top four of their respective weight classes in order to qualify for this weekend’s Missouri USA Wrestling Folkstyle State Championships at Hy-Vee Arena in Kansas City.
When the final whistle blew in Moberly, a total of six orange and black clad OWC grapplers clinched their spots in Kansas City.
For two of the six qualifiers, they earned their spots at state due to at least one of the original top four not being able to attend the state tournament.
This was the case for Jase Schulte and Brayln Reed.
Schulte drew a bye to the quarterfinals before losing by fall to Hillsboro’s Tripp LaMontagne in :52.
Fighting his way back to the fifth-place match, Schulte pinned South Callaway’s Lola Aubuchon in :52 to secure fifth place in the 10U 120-pound bracket and become the first alternate to qualify for state in the event one of the original top four could not attend.
Reed drew a first-round bye to the quarterfinals before facing Ryan Hopkins (Team Action Wrestling).
Pinned in 2:30, Reed drew a pair of byes to the consolation semifinals before losing by fall in 2:03 to Macon’s Grant Williams.
Winning the fifth-place match in the 12U 135-pound bracket by forfeit over Brayden Hollis (Spartan Wrestling Club), Reed put himself in the same position as Schulte.
He was also informed that one of the top-four wrestlers would not be able to attend and therefore advance to state.
Easton Flowers recorded the highest finish among OWC wrestlers placing second in the 10U 130-pound bracket.
Losing both matches in the best two-out-of-three format to Xander DeMatteis (Jr. Owls Wrestling), Flowers will advance to state looking for a top-six finish and a medal.
Mallory Stockton will compete in the state girls tournament after placing third in the 10U 120-pound bracket at regionals.
Winning her quarterfinal match by fall in 1:12, Stockton was pinned in the semifinals by LaMontagne who went on to win a regional title.
Stockton punched her ticket to state with a win by fall in :28 over Eldon’s Ashton McAdams in the third-place match.
Peyton Pohlmann also placed third in the 12U 115-pound bracket earning his spot at state.
Losing a 5-3 decision to Ezekiel Ott (Saint Louis Jesuit Wrestling) in the quarterfinals, Pohlmann earned another shot at Ott in the third-place match.
Winning a 3-2 decision in his second match of the tournament against Ott, Pohlmann left Moberly with a bronze medal.
Will Coppedge earned his spot in Kansas City with a fourth-place finish in the 12U 125-pound bracket.
Advancing to the semifinals, Coppedge was pinned in :43 by Talon Worden before falling in 2:14 to Caleb Sapp (Jefferson City) settling for fourth place.
Jasper Hane (8U 65 pounds) won a 7-0 decision over Jace Gettinger (Ste. Genevieve) before losing by fall in :38 to Mason Proctor (Team Action Wrestling Club).
Other OWC wrestlers also competing in the regional tournament included Greyson Conour (8U 70 pounds), Owen Sells (8U 100 pounds), Augustus Branson (10U 100 pounds), Mason Turner (12U 100 pounds), Austyn Rosselli (12U 125 pounds), Connor Henderson (12U 125 pounds), Micah Duncan (14U 100 pounds) and Cael Walker (14U 155 pounds).
