ST. JAMES — Making the short trip to St. James Friday morning, Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchgirl volleyball teams coached by Emily McKinney and Jamie Ridenhour looked to sweep a daytime doubleheader from St. James’ Lady Tigers in front of the St. James Middle School (SJMS) student body.
Seeing their 7th grade counterparts sweep St. James in two sets 25-13 and 25-21, Ridenhour’s 8th grade Dutchgirls looked to do the same also in two sets.
Jumping out to leads of 7-0 and 4-0 in both sets, Owensville kept their hopes for an undefeated season alive with a sweep of St. James in two sets by scores of 25-9 and 25-8 in 8th grade action.
After a St. James error opened the 8th grade match, Clara Brune served the next six points giving the orange and black a 7-0 lead.
Leading 12-6 later in the set on a Kensli Pfeiffer kill, six consecutive service points from Adalynn Womack led to Makala Tayloe serving the final five points of game one.
Womack served the first four points of game two before Jordan Duncan went on a run of six straight points moving Owensville’s game two lead into double digits at 13-3.
Two Lylah Koch aces later in game two led to Tayloe once again serving the final five points of game two and the match.
Brailie Crosby led the Dutchgirls with nine kills while Kyler Brooks added two kills in game two.
McKinney’s 7th grade Dutchgirls trailed 3-1 and 3-0 respectively in both sets before battling back to sweep their match in two games 25-13 and 25-21.
Tied at 12-12 midway through game one, a St. James error sent Zoie Barnes behind the serving line where she recorded three aces helping OMS to a 16-12 lead.
Leading 17-13 on a Lady Tiger serving error, Zaylie Gromer served up five aces while finishing out Owensville 25-13 game-one victory.
Three more aces from Barnes in game two gave Owensville a 7-6 lead before they went back and forth with St. James throughout the midway point of the second set.
Nursing a 14-12 lead on a St. James attack error, Khloe Thomas served OMS’ next four points giving them an 18-12 lead.
Two Jordyn Crosby aces then put the Dutchgirls up 22-13 before a Gromer kill ended game two and the match.
