Owensville Elementary staff on May 26 sent students off to summer vacation in grand style, waving and cheering as each bus departed.  Gasconade County R-2 School District retirees were recognized May 27 for a combined 277.5 years of service in education and support roles with 194.5 of those years in the district. Superintendent Dr. Chuck Garner, retiring after 30 years in education, shared a story about making lasting impressions on young people, then introduced the retirees including Peggy Linhardt, Frank Brocato, Bethany Jacobs, Opal Buddemeyer, Linda Rasmussen, Monica Wiese, Christine Moritz, Bev Giebler, and Janet DeGreeff. Not present were Beverley Bloemke, Sandra Koppelmann, and Karen Davis. Linhardt hugs Garner after being announced as a 31-year employee of the district’s administrative support staff. Jared Tharp, principal at Gerald Elementary, shows a paper “flower” with messages from his staff to Garner. GES staff deposited personalized flowers into a bucket for Garner which had the message “Just like your time at GCR2, spend your retirement planting one daffodil at a time” printed on it. Garner had a tradition of giving retirees daffodil bulbs to plant but said his source had “dried up” this year. Instead, retirees each received a lawn chair. Dina Schoenfeld was recognized by Dr. Jeri Kay Hardy for 10 years of service to the district — reached the previous school year. Due to COVID-19 concerns in 2020, there was no retirement luncheon. Owensville High School students participating in an end-of-school water balloon fight May 26 included Tyler Perkins, Landon Valley, Logan Evan, Emma Daniels, Anna Finley, and Derek Brandt.
