R-2 directors approve changes to ‘Safe Return’ COVID-19 plan

Gasconade County R-2 Board of Education directors on Monday night approved changes to the Revised Safe Return to School and Continuity Plan.
“For two years, we have been looking at this,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeri Kay Hardy. “You will see the only changes this month are at the very last page where it talks about screening and antigen tools. We are no longer doing those, they are out of date.”
Furthermore, staff and students should follow the district’s policy for illness. If a student does become symptomatic during the school day, they should be isolated.
“The student will be isolated until arrangements can be made that a student be picked up by a parent or guardian to be tested if they are sick,” Hardy said. “Of course, you can’t require testing, but if a parent wants to take them and then take a picture of that test, we don’t have to have that note.”
Hardy said those are the only changes, along with updating the date on the plan.
The board approved the changes to the plan on Sept. 19 during the board meeting with a 6-0 vote.
Additional changes were made to the SEEK Gifted program in the pass and fail and academics sections. The changes were approved with a 6-0 vote in the Gifted Handbook.
Hardy asked the board to approve updates to the superintendent, assistant superintendent and administrative secretary job descriptions.
“These have not been updated in a very long time,” Hardy said. “They have been updated to reflect the positions for director of payroll and personnel, secretary to the superintendent and the board of education, superintendent of schools and assistant superintendent of schools.”
Director Debbie Landolt asked Hardy if they were big changes made to the job descriptions.
“Yes,” Hardy said.
Landolt said they couldn’t see what has changed.
“The superintendent and assistant superintendent — the big changes is there was no mention of curriculum, instruction, assessment on either one,” Hardy said. “For the superintendent position, it actually had the assistant superintendent dismissing employees so there were changes that reflected what that should look like.”
Landolt asked if there were any changes under the terms of employment. Hardy said no. The board approved the changes with a 6-0 vote.
A DECA conference Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 in New York City was also approved with a 6-0 vote for 10 qualifying students to attend, along with sponsors Clara Wehmeyer and Tyler Ahring.
The board also set the 2023 graduation date on a 6-0 vote. “So what you’ll see is our last day for students is Tuesday, May 23, and so Mr. (Kris) Altemeyer would like to set the graduation date for Friday, May 19,” Hardy said.
