Rainy Days Ahead

To the Editor:
There’s a vulgar expression involving urination, headwear and precipitation that pretty much sums up the GOP attitude toward its base and the truth. Recently, staunch Republican Liz Cheney lost her leadership position in the party because she wouldn’t forgo her integrity for the sake of hewing to the party line that Donald Trump had been cheated out of victory and had nothing to do with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. This is just the latest in what has become a farcical display of heavy handed information control by the GOP over it’s all-too-willing-to-believe base. Their method in showing contempt for their own is that, “If you want to make a big deal out of something just keep talking and don’t sweat the facts, or alternatively, if you want something to go away just deny it and then quietly keep it out of the headlines.” Quiet is what Liz Cheney wasn’t.
How do you like being told by Georgia Representative Andrew Clyde who was last seen visibly barricading himself within Capitol chambers, now saying the Jan. 6 insurrection could be viewed as “patriots” on no more than a “normal tourist visit?” By the way, five people died on that tour. Has a cat gotten the tongue of Kevin McCarthy who said after the attack that, “The President bears the responsibility for the January 6th attack on Congress by mob rioters?” Where’s the Mitch McConnell who was so shaken by the attack that in the aftermath he actually spoke that same truth? We’ll tell you… back in line.
The GOP, following Donald Trump’s lead, is perfectly happy to tell you what you should think. What they don’t like, however, is dissent or knowledge. They are presently against a Congressional Commission to investigate the Capitol attack because they want a distancing news blackout not condemning sunshine on their party’s complicity. Conservative media and activists are also pitted against a bipartisan-sponsored bill to preserve Civics classes in our schools because ignorance of our government and public responsibility to stay informed plays right into the hands which happen to be over our eyes. Millions of lies during the Trump Presidency told one truth. The GOP considers the informed as dangerous. This is creating a dilemma for thinking Republicans uncomfortable within their own party as certain unsavory elements have gravitated to this sort of head down, eyes closed style. How do you imagine such a person feels driving home on Sunday morning past the F--- Biden signs in town? What sermon could have been listened to that justifies torchlight racism? Insurrection? Blatant hypocrisy? It’s not unlike the timeless spousal goal of bullies everywhere… “Keep ‘em barefoot and pregnant,” where “barefoot” is still ignorant and “pregnant,” now simply the result of how the GOP treats the entire electorate. If you don’t believe us just hold out your M.A.G.A hat for a pacing Republican politician and watch it “rain.”
