Rehmert’s Dutchmen come up short in FRC road games

Having their Jam the Gym and homecoming festivities spoiled by Union and St. James respectively, Todd Rehmert’s Owensville varsity Dutchmen basketball team looked to get back on the winning track last Tuesday on the road along Highway 100 at New Haven.

Seeing their junior varsity counterparts fall in double overtime 43-42 in spite of a game-high 17 points from Brendan Decker, OHS looked to avoid a similar outcome in varsity action.

Unfortunately for the visiting Dutchmen, that was the case.

Another buzzer beater by New Haven sent the Dutchmen back to OHS on a long bus ride following a 44-42 road loss.

Trailing 13-10 after one quarter, Owensville was led in the first quarter by Brady Smith with four points.

Edged 11-9 in the second quarter, OHS went into halftime trailing the host Shamrocks 24-19.

Pacing the Dutchmen in the first half with four points apiece were Cason Gray, Daxton Mehrhoff and Smith.

Outscoring New Haven 13-8 to start the second half, Rehmert’s Dutchmen went into the fourth quarter tied with the Shamrocks at 32-32.

Going 6-7 from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes, Owensville saw their hopes of an FRC victory dashed in the final seconds.

Trevor Abernathy and Justin Garner shared team-high scoring honors for OHS with nine points.

Mehrhoff followed closely with eight to go along with six each from Smith and Gray.

Three nights later in Pacific, Owensville could not overcome a five-point second quarter before falling to the host Indians, 59-54.

Gray finished with a team-high 20 points for OHS trailed in double figures by Abernathy with 11.

OHS also came up just short 53-47 to Pacific in the JV game.
