Schulte: plan in place for working full time, commission duties

HERMANN — Incoming Gasconade County Presiding Commissioner Tim Schulte said a plan is in place with his employer to allow him adequate time to perform his official duties while still working his full-time job. That should resolve any concerns anyone might have regarding potential conflicts he might face between his job with Peoples Savings Bank and carrying out his duties as the county’s top administrator, he said.

In an interview last week with the Gasconade County Republican, Schulte, who on Aug. 2 won the Republican nomination to succeed retiring Presiding Commissioner Larry Miskel, discussed his concerns about a post-election story in the Gasconade County Republican that suggested Schulte might be facing decisions — including his employment with the banking company — as he prepares to move into the top administrative position of county government.

In an email to the newspaper about the story, Schulte, who earlier this year began his second term on the Gasconade County R-1 School District Board of Directors, said his employer and he “was shocked at the paragraph hinting that I may relinquish my job with the bank. Not true.”

In the email, Schulte pointed out that discussions were held with PSB officials before he ran for the county government job.

“Before the election, I made aware to Mark Laune, (PSB) CEO, of my intentions. He had given his permission and wished me luck. All along knowing that this would take some time away from duties at PSB,” Schulte said.

But, as he noted during the telephone interview last week, there was never any consideration given to leaving his employment with PSB.

“At no point in time did I say I was relinquishing my job at PSB,” he said.

Schulte is expected to step down from his R-1 board seat when he begins his four-year term as presiding commissioner on Jan. 1.

Facing no opposition in November, Schulte is the presumptive winner of the only county government office that was contested in this year’s elections. He will be succeeding Miskel, a retired military man who, along with wife Linda, operates a Bed-and-Breakfast in Hermann. In his two terms as presiding commissioner, Miskel essentially made the job a full-time endeavor, logging many hours away from the courthouse attending meetings both locally and at the regional and state levels.

Associate Commissioners Jerry Lairmore, R-Owensville, and Jim Holland, R-Hermann, also invest significant amounts of time in their official capacity as members of boards and committees.

In the interview, Schulte said he wanted to assure county residents he would be able to spend as much time as is needed to carry out the duties of the office.

No meeting on Thursday, Sept. 1

Gasconade County Commissioners will not be meeting on Thursday. Sept. 1, in Owensville, as normally scheduled for the first Thursday of the month due to a state conference for the county clerk and staff.
