Open on a winning note.

That was the goal Monday night for Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team as they welcomed St. Francis Borgia’s Lady Knights to Owensville High School (OHS) for a non-conference hardwood showdown.

Nursing an 11-9 lead at the 7:06 mark of the second quarter, the offensive flood gates opened as the Dutchgirls ended the second quarter on a 23-0 run giving themselves a 34-9 halftime lead.

Able to keep their lead above 20 points the rest of the game, OHS went on to handily defeat the visitors from Borgia by a final score of 63-32.

“I’m really proud of how we overcame a poor-shooting first quarter, Flanagan said. “Once we got hot in the second quarter, we could not be stopped. We’ll need to utilize our speed and athleticism in order for us to be successful this season.”

One of two seniors on the Dutchgirl basketball roster, Ella Gehlert helped OHS get off to a good start scoring five of Owensville’s eight first-quarter points.

Junior guard Emma Daniels took over in the second quarter scoring nine of Owensville’s 23 points helping the orange and black to a sizable halftime lead.

Third-quarter action belonged to the Daniels cousins Emma and Ali.

Each one scored eight points helped Owensville open the second half with a 16-16 draw in the third quarter against Borgia.

Nearly doubling up the Lady Knights 13-7 in the final eight minutes, Six different Dutchgirls found the scoring column.

Gehlert started the fourth-quarter scoring with a bucket at the 4:53 mark.

Camryn Caldwell made it 54-27 Dutchgirls with a bucket near the midway point of the final period.

Emma Daniels scored her final basket of the game with 3:33 remaining giving her a game-high 21 points.

With 1:37 left, freshman Lily Barker helped Kiana Guerrero get in the scoring column as she hit a basket pushing the Dutchgirl lead to 58-29.

Audrey Quilacio put the Dutchgirls in the 60s with a score at the 1:05 mark before Grace Abell beat the buzzer with 3-pointer on Barker’s second assist of the game.

Ali Daniels joined her cousin in double figures with 12 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Gehlert nearly made it a trio of double-digit Dutchgirls finishing with nine points.

Caldwell posted a solid stat line of eight points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Anya Binkhoelter added four points in the second quarter while Cameron Nowack also hit for two points in the first half.

Celia Gildehaus led Borgia with a double double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.

After a home game last night (Tuesday) against Capital City, the Dutchgirls will spend next week at the Marquette Tournament in Chesterfield.
