HERMANN — Interim Sheriff Scott Eiler is taking steps to begin housing those awaiting trial in Osage County with the start of the new year.
Eiler, who will begin his first full term as sheriff Jan. 1, Thursday morning told the Gasconade County Commission that he has asked the Osage County sheriff to draft a contract for the housing of local inmates. Those awaiting trial in this county have been lodged in recent years in Crawford County.
One concern of Eiler’s is the possibility that Crawford County might raise the daily rate it charges Gasconade County. Gasconade County receives reimbursement for inmate housing from state government, but the rate of reimbursement is less than the amount being charged to Gasconade County. State government long has appropriated significantly less to counties than what has been authorized by state law.
Meanwhile, Eiler has been asked by the Gasconade County R-2 School District to provide a sheriff’s deputy as a resource officer. Owensville will no longer provide a member of its police department as a school officer.
Gasconade County government will budget the entire cost of deputy assigned as the resource officer, but will receive a 75-percent reimbursement from R-2, Eiler said.
Members of the Commission said they felt the local municipality should help support the position, considering that the R-2 campus lies within the city of Owensville.
“I think the city of Owensville should be approached (for support) because it’s in the city,” said Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore, R-Owensville.
“It’s worth asking them to financially participate,” said Presiding Commissioner Larry Miskel, R-Hermann.
In other matters, the Commission accepted the recommendation of Emergency Management Director Dan Dyer not to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with United 211 and the American Red Cross, two agencies with which the county works regarding emergency management planning. Dyer was concerned that the proposed MOU contained provisions about the way the county’s Emergency Operations Center is run. County administrators said the EMD will continue working with the organizations, but they won’t have a say in how the EOC is operated.
