Riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak with victories over Hermann on senior night and New Haven during homecoming, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen looked to end the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) portion of their season last Tuesday night with a victory on the road in Franklin County against Sullivan’s Eagles.

Limited to three points in the first quarter and five in the third, VanLeer’s Dutchmen could not overcome the lack of offense before falling 44-32 on the road in Sullivan.

Trailing 13-3 after one quarter, Owensville got a bucket from Landon Valley and a Will Lauth free throw to keep the Eagles from posting a first-quarter shutout.

Edged 12-11 in the second quarter, the Dutchmen went into halftime trailing the host Eagles 25-14.

Charlie Whelan netted four second-quarter points helping him also lead the Dutchmen in the first half.

Bryce Payne hit a 3-pointer before halftime for three first-half points to go along with two points each in the second quarter from Layne Evans and Garrett Crosby.

Both teams came out sluggish on offense starting the second half with Owensville only being outscored 9-5 by the host Eagles.

Whelan added three points to his first-half point total while Austin Lowder found the scoring column for the first time in the game with two points in the third quarter.

Edging Sullivan 13-10 in the final eight minutes, it was not enough for the Dutchmen to complete their comeback attempt.

Valley led Owensville in the fourth quarter with five points followed by Lauth with four markers and Logan Evans with a fourth-quarter 3-pointer.

For the game, OHS was led by Whelan and Valley with seven points apiece.

Whelan led the Dutchmen defensively with a team-high four steals.

Lauth followed in scoring with five points in addition to four markers from Payne.

Payne added two steals and two rebounds to his three points.

In addition to Logan Evans’ fourth-quarter 3-pointer, his younger brother Layne Evans and Lowder both added two points to round out the Dutchmen scoring at Sullivan.

In spite of not figuring in the scoring, Brendan Decker led Owensville with a team-high five rebounds.

Decker also dished out one assist in addition to Layne Evans, Lowder, Valley and Whelan.

Kyle Lewis led Sullivan with a game-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and six assists.

Scheduled to end their regular season two nights later at Southern Boone against their Eagles, that game was canceled due to inclement weather and it was not rescheduled due to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 3 Boys Basketball Tournament starting Monday night at Sullivan High School.
