Allen Gymnasium on the campus of Vienna High School played host to a sporting event of historic proportions Monday night.
Sports in mid-Missouri were shaken up at the end of the 2023-24 school year with the dissolving of the Show-Me Conference.
As a result, two new conferences were formed in the Central State 8 and the Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC).
Monday night at Vienna High School, the boys basketball era of the SMCC began with a varsity-only showdown between the visiting Bunceton Dragons and host Vienna Eagles.
Vienna senior Alex Zimmer scored the first 2-point field goal on the first assist from Eagle teammate Teagan James at the 7:50 mark of the first quarter of Vienna’s 82-11 victory over the Dragons.
Later in the quarter, fellow Eagle senior Waylon Lenning canned the first 3-pointer by a player on the home team at the 6:55 mark of the opening period.
Just over a minute later, Bunceton sophomore Aaydin Zimmerman hit the first 2-point field goal by a member of the visiting team with 5:35 remaining in the first period.
Lenning also hit the first free throw in SMCC boys basketball history as part of an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter.
Other first-quarter milestones included the first offensive and defensive rebounds by Vienna’s Jayce Bertoni and Bunceton’s Brenton Williams.
Vienna sophomore guard Hunter Schwartze also posted the first steal by a player on the home team.
Second-quarter action saw Bunceton sophomore Tristen Stull post the first blocked shot by a player on the visiting team.
Adding to his first-quarter bucket, Zimmerman also hit the first free throw by a visiting team player for the Dragons with 3:36 until halftime.
With Vienna taking a 57-3 lead into halftime, two more firsts occurred in the third quarter from western Maries County.
Bunceton freshman Gabe McKnight canned the first 3-point field goal by an opposing player at the 2:40 mark of the third quarter while Dylan Long posted the first blocked shot by a home team player.
Coming out on top by a final score of 82-11, Vienna’s Eagles will look to attain more SMCC firsts throughout the remainder of the 2024-25 basketball season.
Additional Eagles on Vienna’s roster in their SMCC opener included Elias Miller, Jaiden Hayes, Chase Weeks and Eli Crum.
Cole Shadwick rounded out Bunceton’s five-man roster.
