What is socialism

Dear Editor,

It seems anytime anyone helps anyone, most Republicans scream Socialism. You are immediately branded a Democrat a liberal or a socialist or all three.

Back in the 1930s, then President FDR, during the height of the Great Depression, said he couldn’t stand by and watch so many Americans suffer. He started Social Security. Medicare came along in 1965 when Lyndon Johnson was president. Between the two programs they have been the greatest boon to the working class and lower 50 percent of Americans ever despite Republican opposition. And Republicans have been fighting Social Security ever since.

I’ll bet not many Republicans turn down Social Security benefits though when they become eligible. How many times did US Rep. Paul Ryan propose massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare when he was the speaker.

Of course, they call this Entitlements which couldn’t be further from the truth. After the government drained the Social Security Trust Fund to the tune of $3.2 trillion, they now say it is a government paid program but the Social Security program has always been self funded.

Trump is buying farmers votes by dumping $60 billion of taxpayer dollars on them to keep many from going into bankruptcy over his disastrous China tariff fiasco. I don’t hear any Republicans screaming Socialism over this either, but then what is it? My point is, there is a fine line between aid and being a Humanitarian. We were put on this earth to help one another, not to stuff our pockets with millions or trillions of dollars and to tell the rest of the world to go to hell. Helping one another is our duty as God fearing individuals and to help those that are unable to help themselves because of unfortunate circumstances.

What about taxpayer funded law enforcement, taxpayer funded roads and bridges, taxpayer funded fire protection, taxpayer funded ambulance service. If that isn’t a form of socialism I don’t know what is. Republicans don’t complain about that either.

The good Lord gave us the seven corporal works of mercy. I will list them for you—feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. These are plain old common sense issues that everyone needs to heed.

But, Republicans really like to cut off food to the needy that is provided through the SNAP program, especially when women and children are concerned.
