Spring break action

By the time this week’s Gasconade County Republican hits area stores and mailboxes, Gasconade County R-2 students will be on a five-day spring break from classes from today (Wednesday) until Monday, March 31 when classes resume.

That does not mean spring sports will take a break.

Owensville High School (OHS) student-athletes in baseball and girls soccer will see action during the break.

Tomorrow (Thursday) will be a park-at-your-own risk day at OHS.

Kim McGee’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team will host Union’s Lady Wildcats in a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) showdown tomorrow (Thursday) night with a 5 p.m., kickoff in varsity-only action.

While that is going on, Owensville JV Dutchmen baseball will host Blair Oaks’ Falcons at OHS Field with a 4:30 p.m., first pitch.

Varsity Dutchmen baseball and Dutchgirl soccer will also be in action on Saturday, March 29.

Steven Kemp’s diamond Dutchmen will play a varsity baseball doubleheader at Southern Boone County High School in Ashland against the host Eagles and Mexico Bulldogs.

OHS’ twin bill will begin at 1 p.m., against Mexico followed at approximately 3 p.m., by a non-conference showdown against the host Eagles.

Also Saturday at Mexico High School, Owensville Dutchgirl soccer will open the Chris Hotop Classic at 10 a.m., against the host Lady Bulldogs.

A win in that match would advance them into the championship at 4 p.m., against the winner of Jefferson City and Festus while a loss to Mexico would send them to the third-place match at 2 p.m., against the Jefferson City-Festus loser.

Games will be played with the normal 40-minute halves.

In the event of a tie at the end of regulation, a 10-minute golden goal overtime period will be played before going to penalty kicks if neither team scored during the aforementioned 10-minute golden goal period.

Spring sports action will kick back into high gear Monday with OHS golf, baseball, track and soccer all in action.

Cullen VanLeer’s OHS golf team will compete all day Monday at the Union Tournament hosted by Birch Creek Golf Course before Matt Candrl’s OHS track team will make the short trek south on Highway 19 for the Cuba Relays with events beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team will host Salem’s Tigers at OHS Field with a 4:30 p.m., in a contest that will carry district seeding implications for the upcoming MSHSAA Class 4, District 4 Baseball Tournament.

McGee’s Dutchgirl soccer team will cap Monday’s festivities with a road match in Wardsville against Blair Oaks’ Lady Falcons at 5:30 p.m., inside the Falcon Athletic Complex.
