St. Clair offense too much for Dutchmen gridders

ST CLAIR — With both St. Clair and Owensville entering Friday night football action on long winning streaks, something had to give.

Unfortunately for Dutchmen fans, it was their seven-game winning streak that was snapped following Owensville’s 58-20 loss on the road at St. Clair against the Bulldogs.

“You simply have to tip your hat to St. Clair,” Cabot said. “They were able to run the ball on us and we had no answer on defense to stop them.”

Forced into a three-and-out on their opening possession, the visiting Dutchmen had to punt the ball to St. Clair giving them a short field.

Anytime a good team gets a short field, bad things usually happen for the opposition.

“We gave a good team a short field too many times and we’ll have to avoid doing that this Friday against an athletic Cardinal Ritter team,” Cabot said.

Two plays into St. Clair’s first drive, Lance McCoy broke the scoreless tie on a 9-yard touchdown run at the 10:07 mark of the opening quarter.

Landen Roberts’ extra point left Owensville trailing St. Clair 7-0.

Still unable to establish an offensive rhythm, OHS turned the ball over on a fumble giving the Bulldogs yet another short field.

Just over two minutes after their first score, Dakota Gotsch found the end zone from 15 yards away at the 8:02 mark of the first quarter.

Two minutes later, the Owensville offense was able to get on the scoreboard.

Junior quarterback Brendan Decker connected with fellow junior Derek Brandt on a 26-yard TD pass.

In spite of Charlie Whelan’s missed extra point, OHS now trailed St. Clair 14-6 at the 6:00 mark of the first quarter.

That unfortunately for the Dutchmen would be their lone score of the first half.

St. Clair scored one more touchdown in the first quarter and two in the second quarter to leave Owensville trailing 35-6 at halftime.

Allowing a field goal just past the midway point of the third quarter, the Dutchmen offense was able to double their point total at the dog pound.

Going back to the air, Decker found running back Austin Lowder 55-yard TD strike with 5:22 for the third quarter.

Following a missed two-point conversion attempt, Owensville trailed St. Clair 38-12.

OHS’ final score of the game came at the 2:23 mark of the fourth quarter when Decker found Brandt from 10 yards before also scoring the two-point conversion making the score 52-20 before St. Clair tacked on another late score.

“We were able to beat a good football team tonight,” St. Clair head football coach Brad Robbins said. “They never gave up and I have a lot of respect for coach Cabot and his football team.”

Finishing the regular season at 7-2, Owensville will open Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 2 first-round action Friday night hosting Cardinal Ritter.
