His first notch in the varsity coaching win column.

That is what first-year Owensville Dutchmen head baseball coach Steven Kemp was after Monday night during the consolation semifinals of the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) Preseason Baseball Tournament at OHS Field against New Haven’s Shamrocks.

Looking the bounce back from a 14-4 first-round loss to St. Clair on Friday, Kemp’s Dutchmen jumped on New Haven to the tune of an eight-run first inning before going on to a 12-0 victory in five innings over the visiting Shamrocks.

Leading off the bottom of the first inning, Jaden Gerlemann singled and scored on a Landon Ely RBI ground out after Gerlemann stole two bases.

Austin Long kept the line moving with a one-out single before back-to-back walks by Landon Kramme and Layne Evans loaded the bases freshman Chase Weirich.

Lining a 3-0 pitch to left field, Weirich drove in Long and Kramme bumping the Dutchmen lead to 3-0 after his first varsity hit.

Wyatt Kramme then delivered a productive out on a RBI ground out that allowed Evans to score increasing the Dutchmen advantage to 4-0.

A Chris Allen walk extended the inning to senior third baseman Will Lauth who then delivered an RBI single allowing Weirich to score padding the Owensville lead to 5-0.

Already with a single and run scored in the inning, Gerlemann added a two-RBI double scoring Allen and Lauth making it a 7-0 Dutchmen lead.

Gerlemann later stole home capping Owensville’s eight-run first inning.

Retiring the Shamrocks in order in the top of the second inning, the Dutchmen went back to work in the bottom half of the frame looking to add to their commanding lead.

Landon Kramme walked and scored on an Evans RBI ground out making it 9-0.

Wyatt Kramme then singled and scored bumping the Dutchmen lead into double digits by a score of 10-0 after two innings.

After a scoreless third inning, Owensville went back to work in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Evans started the bottom of the fourth reaching on an error before Zaiden Gates walked to put two runners on base.

Singles from Allen and Jansen Loeb allowed Evans and Gates to score and move the Dutchmen three outs away from giving Kemp his first varsity coaching victory leading 12-0 after four innings.

Allen ended the game throwing out a would be Shamrock base stealer helping the Dutchmen even their record at 1-1 on the young season.

Gerlemann led the Dutchmen offense with three hits, two runs scored and four stolen bases.

Landon Kramme and Evans also scored a pair of runs for Kemp’s Dutchmen.

Friday against St. Clair, the Dutchmen had a 2-1 lead after two innings before the Bulldogs five runs in the fourth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach for the orange and black.

Weirich started Friday’s season opener for Owensville with two strikeouts while working around two hit batters in the top of the first inning.

Reaching base on a hit by pitch with one out in the bottom of the first, Ely stole second and third base before scoring on a wild pitch to put the Dutchmen out in front 1-0 after one inning.

In spite of allowing a game-tying solo home run in the top of the second inning, Weirich’s offense picked up him in the bottom of the second inning.

Wyatt Kramme led the frame off with a single before Gates was hit by a pitch to move him up to second base.

Hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, Gerlemann delivered a RBI single up the middle scoring Kramme to put the Dutchmen back in front 2-1 after two innings.

From that point, St. Clair scored 12 unanswered runs to put Owensville in a hole they could not climb out of.

Owensville’s final runs against St. Clair came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gerlemann was hit by a pitch and scored before Austin Long singled and scored OHS’ final run against St. Clair.

OHS will host Rolla on Friday at 1 p.m., at OHS Field in a game that was postponed last night (Tuesday).
