A man is dead following a shoot out with Franklin County deputies.
The incident began when a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a blue 2007 Honda CRV near I-44 and U.S. Highway 50 on March 21 at 9:42 p.m.
Sheriff Steve Pelton says the driver refused to yield to the deputy and fled, traveling east on State Route AT. As the vehicle approached the intersection of State Route AT near U.S. Highway 100, the suspect pulled onto a business parking lot.
Two deputies, in separate vehicles, also pulled onto the lot. As the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop, the driver exited the CRV and started shooting into the deputies’ cars. One deputy was shot in the shoulder. The second was shot in the arm and the shoulder. The deputies were able to return fire striking the suspect.
Both deputies were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was also transported , but Pelton reported his condition was unknown on March 22. It was reported by KSDK in St. Louis on March 24, that the suspect died Saturday night.
Pelton says the man’s identity has not been released due to the ongoing investigation, however he described him as a 21-year-old male from St. Louis.
On Monday, Pelton identified the deputies as Sgt. Weggemann and Deputy Burgess. Weggemann is a 19-year veteran law enforcement officer. He was released from the hospital March 22. Burgess is a nine-year law enforcement veteran. He is still currently in the hospital expected to be released within the next few days.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s (MSHP) Division of Drug and Crime Control was asked to conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. Pelton referred all further questions to them.
Col Dallas Thompson with the MSHP, said his agency’s task was to provide an independent look into “the use of force” in the incident. He had no information as the man’s identity or what reason was for the pursuit. He reported that his agency did not arrest the suspect and he referred further questions back to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
