Monday was Flag Day. Celebrated every June 14, it commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
The Second Continental Congress, on June 14, 1777, passed a resolution that read: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day in 1919, and then on Aug. 3, 1949, National Flag Day was designated by an Act of Congress.
A poll by the Pew Research Center in 2007 — I could not find anything more recent — found that 73 percent of Republicans say they display the flag at home, work, or on their car; this compares with 63 percent of independents and 55 percent of Democrats.
Flying the Stars and Stripes is a sign of patriotism. It shows you honor this country and believe in its values.
Unfortunately, there seem to be more liberal/progressive Democrats who are hell-bent on attacking our flag and those who fly it.
Mara Gay, an op-ed writer for the New York Times last week, appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” where she said she was “disturbed” to see “dozens of American flags” flown by Donald Trump supporters during a trip to Long Island, New York over Memorial Day Weekend.
“I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed. I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with explicatives [sic] against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing,” Gay said.
I guess Gay saw nothing wrong with bumper stickers and signs with derogatory and hateful words against Donald Trump. The only difference was those vehicles were not flying the Stars and Stripes.
Michael Harriot, senior writer for The Root agreed with Gay when he tweeted, “Anyone who flies an American flag on a pickup truck is a whole different breed of white people.”
Basically, they are calling truck driving, flag flying Americans racist without any evidence. Do they not know that pickup truck drivers are made up of men, women, black, white, Asian, Native American, rich, poor, middle class, etc.
According to research, Hispanic buyers accounted for 22 percent of the total incremental growth of new F-150 sales from 2010 to 2017. New Silverados are more popular with Hispanic buyers than new F-150s.
In Virginia last year, students at Franklin County High School were told they could not fly the American flag from their trucks because it might be offensive.
I guess Gay and Harriot would support a national law banning the U.S. flag from being flown on pickup trucks.
It’s leftists who burn the American flag to show their hatred of our country.
Last October, a group of pro-Trump demonstrators gathered in Boston for a protest against Democrat violence. A video shows leftist agitators as they attack police and burn The Star-Spangled Banner proving the point of the pro-Trump crowd.
On election night last November, leftists burned the U.S. flag in Washington D.C. and Portland, Ore.
According to a report by Fox News, a group of university professors in 2015 signed a letter showing their solidarity with students who tried to ban the American flag at the University of California, Irvine – because they said “Old Glory contributes to racism.”
In a race to see what woke leftist can go the farthest, the current winner is food writer and activist Raj Patel who last month called apple pie racist.
In an article about “food injustice” in The Guardian on May 1, Patel argued that apple pie was “born of American colonialism and slave labor.”
I never knew there was such as thing as “food injustice.” I only rate my food by sight, smell and taste.
I wonder if the next items the woke crowd will attack will be baseball and hot dogs.
I don’t think for an instant that everyone who voted for Joe Biden in November hates the American flag and believes it’s a sign of racism. I just wish they would push back more against those on the far left who do.
