When asked what changes people would like to see in Gerald, cleaning up the town is always high on the list.
Sometimes, it just takes a few people to get the ball rolling.
Monday morning, Sue Altemeyer, Lauri Link and Terese Licavoli arrived at Roadside Park armed to the teeth with landscaping tools. The park sites alongside W. Fitzgerald Avenue and Main Street, making it highly visible.
They spent the better part of the day trimming trees, raking, weed eating, picking up trash and sweeping sidewalks and curbs.
The pile of limbs became so large, the public works department sent a trailer over to help them to the yard waste dump at the old city lagoon. It took many trips to get the park cleared of debris.
The group called it quits mid-afternoon, exhausted but triumphant in what they had accomplished. Don’t expect to them to sit on their laurels, as they spent their time working planning other projects to do around town.
While they may not be able to do anything about the eyesore structures in town, perhaps their efforts will spur elected officials to become more aggressive on that front.
